staying in nyc for 7 days and some shopping is on the agenda. is it worth the trip to woodbury common?

Outlet stores offer no better prices than your weekly sale at your local department store. Why waste a day in NYC schlepping to Woodbury common (1hr+ each way door to door).

If you are into outlet shopping then by all means go for it. Whether that is a more enjoyable use of your time than seeing other, more unique NYC sites is a personal decision.

chadwickap - it depends on what type of shopping experience you are looking for - you can find almost anything you want in NYC so why bother going all the way up to Woodbury Commons?

I'd try for sample sales rather than outlet malls. You get a better bargain and can score a one of a kind piece that never made it to production. Time Out NY lists sales.

Go to Paramus instead, way more to chose from and I think that NJ has no tax on clothes??

I don't think so. To my observation, the prices were not that favorable and it's been widely reported that, especially many of the clothing stores, stock completely different merchandise selected specifically for the outlets.

Years ago, there were some terrific bargains/finds/mark downs, but we don't bother anymore.

All I ever stop by outlets for these days is Harry & David, especially for the fantastic cranberry relish that cannot be ordered online and they don't ship. This last time, it was $5.50/jar, 3/$10, $39 for a case of 12 plus another 10% off.

Better to shop in the city for more unique items - though there's nearly nothing you can't get on the web - often for less.

I saw a pair of shoes in NYC, but didn't want to carry them around all day. Bought them at Zappos when I got home. No sales tax and free shipping.

Alot of the people on the board live here in NYC, and an earlier poster is right if you know where to go, you can get some good prices on things,,,,,so what are you looking for and we can make some suggestions.

Loehman's
(Conway's for inexpesive jeans and tees)

If you can be a bit more specific I'll bet we can come up with some great ideas for you.

If you are intent on buying a lot - and know Woodbury is having sales - then it pays to spend a day there. (At end of season you can sometimes get items for 20% of retail.)

But - if you're looking for just a few things, and Woodbuty isn;t in sale mode (check the web site) you can do just as well with sales in the city - which are always happening.

I'll have to disagree with most of the previous posters.
Woodbury Common is definitely with a visit. With over 200 stores, it is one of the largest and best outlets in the country.
The range of stores is incredible and you can get some great bargains.
Paramus?? It can't compare to Woodbury Common is the number of stores.
Daffy's, Filene's, etc.? Their very existence is in selling yesterday's styles that didn't sell in the stores! You'll do better at Woodbury Common.
