Shopping in South Carolina
My husband is going to South Carolina on a business trip and we are going to make a weekend trip out of it. Are there any upscale shops in South Carolina - or large department stores. It will be our first visit to South Carolina - any info is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

What city?

South Carolina is not a shopping mecca. I'd spend the weekend in Charleston or on one of the beaches and shop at boutiques nearby.
Where are you visiting from? That may make a difference in your shopping expectations. |
Geez - I'm sorry - it would help if I would have put what city we will be visting. We are staying in Charleston, South Carolina. We live in Miami Beach. Thanks for your help.

Church Street has upscale shops. Although not large or upscale, I would highly recommend a trip to the straw market--a very famous Charleston outdoor market.

guzmane-
Charleston Sc is TERRIFIC!! If you LOVE SHOES, the best palce in the world is Charleston-at BOB ELLIS SHOES--they carry EVERY SIZE and Width!! Mens and Ladies---Very Upscale. Copper Penny on King St is upscale ladies--as is CHRISTIAN MICHI and MOO ROO HANDBAGS plus Nancy's--all of these are on King St.. Plus King Street is filled with FABUOUS antique shops... someone else should know more about the shops-but these are the ones I love-- Plus Charleston Place is a big inside city shopping Mall and there is also a Saks across the street. Make sure you go to the Market Place on Meeting and buy a seagrass basket- they are made by local ladies and are worth a fortune--beautiful!!!! Charleston is a FABULOUS city with tons to do-lots of walking and make sure you visit a few of the historic houses on the battery. |
Andy knows how to shop!
There's very little I can add. King Street should easily keep you busy while your husband is working. I also second taking a look at the sweetgrass baskets. Terribly expensive, but an art, and possibly a dying one. Also the ladies sell flowers on the street in the summer and it really makes a hotel room feel luxurious. The market itself is an upscale flea market, perhaps save that for when your husband is with you. Black Market minerals is a shop on Market street that has really neat casual "beach jewelry" for practically free. Perfect for gifts and souvineers for young ladies. |
If you have a car go over to Route 17 in Mt. Pleasant to shop for your sweetgrass basket. I hate to say this, but you can buy an antique basket for less than they are selling for now.

Not to take us off topic (heaven forbid) but if you want some light summer reading I'm in the midst of a book I picked up at the grocery store this week. "Shem Creek" by Dorothea Benton Frank, set in Mt. Pleasant and Charleston. NJ mom with 2 daughters begin a new life in SC. Nothing historic or life changing - just enjoyable light summer reading billed as "A Lowcountry Tale". She also wrote "Pawleys Island".

Also on King Street, A J Davis. Great mens clothing. Dh did all his shopping there when we lived in Savannah. And while he was in there I was either at Bob Ellis or a women's place just up from AJ Davis. I'm blanking on the name. Terrific antiques on King St too.
