Shopping in NYC
 

Hopefully going to NYC on 2 separate trips in the next few months, one with my husband and the other with some girlfriends for a birthday celebration.

Each trip will be quite short, and I want to get the most out of both of them...Therefore, plan!

Wondering if anyone can give me ther thoughts on areas/neighbourhoods that are a must-go in terms of shopping.

Thinking of Soho with my husband, as we can browse the galleries. He is not much of a shopper and we will probably try and get to a museum or two as well (MoMA for sure).

When it comes to the trip with the girlfriends, anywhere that has great deals is the plan. They can shop all day and night!

Are you looking for ubertrendy? Traditional designer? Moderate stuff at great prices?

Do you want to consider discount malls outside the city? Or just great neighborhood browsing for interesting stuff?

My favorites in the city are:
Daffy's - Several all over the city,
the largest is on 34th and
6th.
Macy's - bargins can certainly be had
34&amp; 6th
Loweman's - 17th and 7th (did I spell
that right?)
Century 21 - sometimes you can find
great bargins here, way
downtown across from Ground
Zero.
Filene's Basement - the new one on
14th and Broadway is 3
floors, always bargins
there.
DSW - NEW to the city also on 14th
downstairs from Filene's
Time Warner Center - ok probably no
bargins, but nice very
upscale shopping.

While I like Century 21 and have found great deals there, it is still expensive. Clothes are marked down from $500 to $100 and that sort of thing. You also must spend a ton of time there digging.

I don't really car for Macy's.

Bloomingdales is great. I can afford to shop there and more upscale than Macy's.

Way high end that I love love love is Bergdorf Goodman, Bendels, Saks, Takashamya, Jeffrey and Barneys. Can I afford them? Not very often.

Armani Exchange (A/X) is great fun. Think 'hip Gap'. I also like H&amp;M but be prepared for masses of people.

Yes, more specific as to your style/price range/normal favorites please.

The newest Filene's Basement is great!
I got a great Ralph Lauren denim jacket for about $20!

For a fun time shopping you must go to Canal Street in China Town! Any kind of bargains you can imagine.

Well, you have to walk up Madison Avenue...just to experience it. SoHO is great...but it will be packed with tourists. It all depends on your budget.....SoHo is super expensive. However, there are some jems..

West Village: Marc Jacobs and many others; Meatpacking: Stella McCartney, Jeffrey, Alexander McQueen, Yigael Azrouel, Scoop, etc.;

oops.... posted too soon... Nolita: Mayle, Nanette Lepore, Tory, Resurrection; Soho: Chanel, Prada, D&amp;G, Kirna Zabete, Klee, etc.

That should keep you occupied (and broke).

I just got back from four days in New York with the family. With the help of my husband (he took the kids), I got some shopping in. One afternoon I &quot;power shopped&quot; Soho. Well worth it for a variety of stores. Day two way Madison Ave/ 5th Ave with Bloomingdales, Barneys, Bergdorfs, Bendels.....

Other posters have asked the correct questions. Who are you, what is your price range (luxe or bargain shopper, and what ar you looking for?? Post and many will fill you in.

I got a amazing dress in Soho- more money than I should have spent, but I &quot;needed&quot; it. Loved the area as it is unique. Barneys and Bergdorfs were my favorites, but very very expensive.

Pre-book yur tickets to Moma or go later in the day. We got there a few minutes before opening an there were about 1,000 people (no joke) in front of us. Theline moves quickly but I could have saved a lot of time!! If you do go in the morning take an elevator to the top and work your way down. Most people work upwards. The American folk Museum is next door. It's very small and was sort of a lt down when compared to MoMa, but the gift shop is full of one of a kind items.

If you want to go to art galleries with your husband - I think there are more of them in Chelsea now than SoHo. You could combine a visit to these galleries with a visit to the shopws of the meatpacking district.

And I suggest a meal at Florent if you follow this agenda. It's a 24 hour bistro.

Wow...I love all you shoppers.

We are all celebrating our 40th birthdays (trip with the girls) and don't have oodles of money to spend...so the bargain places are where we want to be.

I wouldn't say that we are super trendy fashionistas, but we do have good taste, like nice, up-to-date things and of course...shoes (way too easy to try on!).

Also, one-of-a-jewellery (semi-precious stones, silver, etc.)
