Shooting at Empire State Building

I hope all visitors to our city are okay. Apparently a disgruntled employee with a gun started shooting outside the ESB.

The shooter and at least one bystander were killed. Several others injured.

When the hell are we finally going to realize that we have to ban guns???

NYC has very strict gun control laws - but there are so many places that guns can be bought by anyone (including children and the mentally ill) with no restrictions, regulations or controls - that this continues to happen.

Law enforcement - including members of my family - are strongly FOR gun control. Why don't we just do it?

ekscrunchy Aug 24th, 2012 11:31 AM

Strongly agree. There has been a worrisome wave of shootings in recent weeks. What will it take to enact a ban....?

Nothing will ever change in this country unless a different Supreme Court revisits the issue and the NRA loses some of its lobbying clout -- neither of which appears imminent, or even likely.

Maybe if some lunatic starts shooting up an NRA convention with assault weapons and 6000 rounds of ammo - like the CO movie theater killer did - maybe then they'll reconsider? But probably not.

The Supreme Court has chipped away at the 4th Amendment to the point that it has become almost meaningless, yet it staunchly defends the private "right to bear arms", which it perceived - wrongly, IMO - to be contained in the Second Amendment. Some priority.

At the time of the CO shooting, a guest on the Rachel Maddow show said that since RFK's shooting in 1968, more than half a million people have been killed by guns in this country. What a sick statistic!

Of course the NYPD doesn't want anyone but them to have a gun in NYC. All of the people injured this morning were injured by police bullets. I don't know if any of them were armed but I feel if any of them were armed, they were justified to shoot the police that shot them.
The original shooter killed the person he had a beef with and shot no one else.
People in NYC don't know the difference between a sawed off shotgun and a .45 handgun.
Remember the black guy who pulled out his wallet and ended up getting shot in the soles of his feet after he was dead?

>>> All of the people injured this morning were injured by police bullets. I don't know if any of them were armed but I feel if any of them were armed, they were justified to shoot the police that shot them >>>

Oh, right, that would have been really good. And are you saying that the police just randomly and deliberately shot at innocent bystanders? Or are you leaving out some details?

>>>> The original shooter killed the person he had a beef with and shot no one else. >>>>

Ah, a reasonable and fair killer! The police should have just stayed out of it.

>>> People in NYC don't know the difference between a sawed off shotgun and a .45 handgun.

I'm not sure what your point is, but is that a bad thing?

Both are firearms that are capable of expelling bullets and killing people, are they not?

tomfuller Aug 24th, 2012 01:14 PM

Non lethal force such as a Taser is called for when there are innocents behind the shooter.
If the police had used shotguns with birdshot, nobody but the guy with the .45 would have been hurt.
The projectiles that come from a shotgun are called slugs and pellets not bullets.

There is a nice, active debate on this in the LOUNGE if you guys want to partake.

panecott Aug 25th, 2012 04:08 AM

Thanks for the ballistics lesson.

Ray Kelly is the NYC Police Commissioner. Why don't you contact him and tell him your thoughts on how police should respond to deadly force. @@

"If the police had used shotguns with birdshot, nobody but the guy with the .45 would have been hurt."

ROTFLMAO

tomfuller Aug 25th, 2012 01:53 PM

If two police officers fire 16 bullets at less than 25 feet and hit the "alleged suspect" 3 times, it is a sad day for the NYPD.
They could not blame any of the 9 injured on the suspect since his .45 was jammed.
Just be glad that no one tossed a lit cigarette into the curb where the gasoline leaked out of a car.
From what I saw on the video, the police could have moved to the street and fired toward the ESB with no one in the background. This avoids puncturing any gas tanks.
Only NYPD Supervisors are trusted with Tasers. The rest of the officers have guns that don't jam.

nytraveler Aug 25th, 2012 04:14 PM

And they're supposed to use shotguns with birdshot against a murderer who, for all they know going in, may have an assault rifle. (And how would a gazillion birdhshot flying around prevent bystanders from being injured?)

Why don;t we tell them to use BB guns? Or peashooters?

arun_roy Aug 25th, 2012 07:38 PM

In 1994 i was allowed out of JFK and then in without any thorogh checks. Now you habve all those strict checks. You learn from mistakes. Time to have strict gun control before it is too late. The other choice is linger on and face something like 9/11 and theb overdo everything

arun_roy Aug 25th, 2012 07:39 PM

then for theb

Aduchamp1 Aug 26th, 2012 12:44 AM

Maybe cops can also sit in duck blinds and wait for killers.

I understand NYPD should have guns for all occasions with matching accessories. But they do have a simple black version that they can use all times of the day.

It is this impecable logic that keeps the NRA alive and thriving.
