Do a Hawaii search and you will find posting re: these hotels.

We stayed at the Surfrider in the historic building with an ocean view and loved it. It is a beautiful, old hotel that has been carefully maintained. I have not stayed at the Hawaiin so can't compare but I would not hestitate to stay at the Moana again.

They are both nice hotels. My favorite is the Moana. In my experience the service is cheerier and the hotel in general is livelier. See rants and raves section on fodors.

Penny it's the Sheraton Moana Surfrider. The old section is the Banyon Wing. Think you meant a different hotel you would avoid?

Vote for the Moana. Less stuffy than the Royal Hawaiian and has alot more charm IMHO. Have a cocktail at the bar under the Banyan Tree while watching the sunset and listening to the free Hawaiian entertainment. Excellent!
