Want to find Bed and breakfast but not on a farm something elegant. Are any of the caverns worthwhile? What sites are not to be missed?

You have to go to the Endless Caverns. It's not as popular as Luray Caverns - but it's just as nice. You should also go to Skyline Drive and take a hike, or drive up the mountain. They also offer horseback riding, and a trail to the waterfalls throughout the mountain.

I recommend going in the fall/autumn, when the trees are at their best!
Please please see the Endless Caverns.....or Luray....

We loved Luray. Don't miss Jefferson's home at Monticello. It's not far from the mountains. We stopped on our way from Washington to Luray. The Skyline Drive is beautiful. Drive slow and watch out for deer.

The "elegant" B&B you're looking for is called L'Auberge Provencale. It is in White Post, Virginia at the junction of Rtes 340 and 50, roughly 90 minutes west of Washington. It's a small, 10-room inn with a superb restaurant. It isn't cheap (neither is the restaurant), but the ambience is like a little bit of Provence in the Shenandoah Valley. You can call for reservations at (540) 837-1375.

As to "don't miss" sights, the number one sight is Skyline Drive, which is to Virginia what the Pacific Coast Highway is to California; an unbroken, meandering road that offers one breathtaking vista after another. There are many hiking trails along the way; usually loops of 1 to 4 miles. They take you into some beautiful forest settings.

Things of interest to do: In Harrisonburg, there's the only quilt museum with which I'm acquainted. If you're into quilts, it's a must see. The Glen Burnie estate west of Winchester has both house and grounds that are beautifully maintained and worthy of a detour. And, between the valley and Washington is the Manassas National Battlefield; probably the best such historic site (along with Gettysburg) in the country.

Finally, a few miles over the border in Berkeley Springs, the state of West Virginia has, for reasons lost to the ages, decided to be in the massage business. The Berkeley Springs State Park offers half-hour massages (including soaking time and such, over an hour) for the preposterous sum of $30. Reservations are at 800-CALLWVA. It isn't the equal of what you'd get at the Homestead or Greenbriar, but it isn't $100 either. Separate facilities for men and women.

If you're coming for the color, the peak month is October. Reserve early.

In Staunton, VA consider the Bell Grae Inn, and in Harrisonburg, the Joshua Wilton House.

Lizzie,
I would recommend staying in Staunton (I may be biased since I grew up there), but it's a charming small town in a great location--right at the interesection of I-64 and I-81. It's just 30 min. from Harrisonburg and the Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway, and only 40 min. from Charlottesville and Lexington. I'd recommend Montclair bed and breakfast. It's across the street from Mary Baldwin College and within blocks of many great restaurants. The owners are so gracious (my husband and I stayed there on our wedding night). Let me know if you have any other questions.
