Shelter Island
Has anyone ever been to Shelter Island?
|
Yes, it is a very quaint version of the hamptons. Sunset Beach is beautiful, especially the hotel and bar there. The island has a warm feeling to it, the downtown is small and precious, and I would love to go back.
|
Yes, why? Agree Sunset Beach is great.
|
I live about 15 minutes away. What do you want to know?
|
Are you referring to San Diego Shelter Island? Or some other destination?
|
We used to go to Shelter Island NY every summer.
It is lovely and we alway wished we could buy one of those big old Victorian summer homes.. |
Shelter Island off Long Island-I'm thinking of 5 days the last week of June. I live in New York and have heard it's a nice getaway. I looked at the Sunset Beach website it looks nice. Any other recommendations for hotel,or restaurants? Thanks
|
There are not too many options. Sunset Beach is actually a circa 50's-60's motel that's been gentrified. The rooms are not all that, but it's a lovely location right across from the beach. The restaurant and bar is a real "go to" place. Good food but it's getting too expensive imo. In season (June is bit early) it attracts a lot of Europeans and that's mostly who works there. You will find young families with kids and all ages really. (ie not just a singles place)
Ram's Head Inn is at the other end of the island. It's much bigger but somewhat like a place frozen in time (and not so updated as Sunset Beach). The Chequit Inn is owned by the same people as the Ram's Head Inn. It's sort of in a town area, not on the beach. I don't think the rooms are terrific. It's an old building. The Olde Country Inn is near Sunset Beach. Could be nice. I've eaten at all these places and stayed at none (but I have seen the rooms at Sunset Beach.) |
Go hiking at Mashomack, an old hunting estate now owned by the Nature Conservancy. Beautiful, natural grounds, different length tails, a long untouched seashore with beach areas, lovely marsh areas and well run visitors center.
You can't stay there (unless you have a connection to the Nature Conservancy) but it is a wonderful nature sanctuary to visit and hike. It takes up about a third of the island. |
Thanks for your feedback I will look into all the info!

And of course take the ferry to the North Fork and visit the wineries. They're beautiful and making some world-class wine these days.
