Shell timeshare/Hawaii....
 

Does anyone know anything good/bad about this timeshare company? Its based on points & its a lifetime deal and can be used Hawaii or anywhere in the world where they have properties. Kauai Coast resort is there Kauai property & we were very impressed. Just wondering if anyone else has a Shell timeshare.

I stayed at one of their properties in San Francisco and it was nice. Timeshares can be a great value if you buy on the resale market. If you buy from the property itself, it's like buying a car. Loses $$ the minute you "drive off the lot"

We recently bought a Shell timeshare on the Big Island from my sister - Paniolo Greens. She has stayed there and liked it a lot, but bought one nearer the beach. Paniolo is about 10 mi. from water. I researched it online (you can do this for free at http://www.tripadvisor.com and type in Paniolo Greens or the name of any Shell property or any property for that matter. They give pretty unbiased personal reviews. Anyway, you can purchase a timeshare (ours is deeded and I think that is the best way - the price never goes up - with points it can take more and more to go somewhere)pretty reasonably on the secondary market. Check out eBay = search for timeshare + big island or shell.
We will be going to the Big Island in late January. I hope it is as wonderful as our trip to Maui was last year. I know I don't have much info to offer - but someone told me to avoid the 'points system' if possible. Others may have a different take.

A postscript on the Shell timeshare. I would say you probably should avoid buying direct from the company - for $10 you can join Tug (Timeshare Users Group) and check out ALL the timeshares for sale - usually for HALF or less of retail. They have reviews. Another place to check is REDWEEK.COM. It costs about $10 to join that one too. You don't have to own a timeshare to join - I did it just to research properties. But then my sister came through with the deal of the century - but there is invaluable info at these sites.

I agree on checking out the Timeshare Users Group (TUG) website to first LEARN the best & cheapest way to buy a timeshare. You do NOT have to join (but they would like it if you do - then you can access the members only sections) to get into the TUG website. LEARN first..then decide if you want to buy one. Good luck
