Sharks Close Big Island Beaches

Several 10-15 foot tiger sharks were spotted off Hapuna Beach today, forcing the closure of Hapuna, Spencer, Mauna Kea and "69" beaches until at least noon tomorrow. Noone attacked by the sharks.

Yikes! The Hilton swimming lagoon looks better than ever right now! :-)

Wow, sharks! We were there last year, this same month and snorkled out by the rocks where the turtles are for a long while... how scary.

Thanks for the scoop. Will this affect the area around Kona?

Yikes! We have stayed at Hapuna twice over the last couple of years, and always snorkel there in the morning!

I see multiples all the time off the pier by my house playing in the surf.

I think they are about 6-7 foot sand tigers. Not vicious like the tiger sharks.

P.M.~ if the sharks are spotted near Kona, they will close those beaches. Usually they swim off after a day or two and the beaches are reopened. Anyone want to be the first in the water?

Not me!!!!! Those guys would be smackin' their lips...or gnashing their teeth anyway..sharks don't have lips do they.

I almost choked on my coffee when I saw this post as we are going to the HBP in 3 weeks. Thank goodness someone said they leave after a few days. I hope! Sorry for the people that are their now. Ahhhhh...nature!

Leaving for Kona tomorrow....if I never post again, you'll know I was on the breakfast menu!

sharks still there, 25 yards from shore in 4 foot water.

I know a guy that used to be lifeguard in the Florida Panhandle. He said that if the average person knew how many sharks he spotted on the horizon then there wouldn't be that many people swimming!

I was snorkeling once in Kauai and spotted a reef shark, not dangerous but still a shark. I became Jesus and walked on water to the shore.

My horses kept getting out and we realized they were walking across the pond. I didn't realize they could walk on water.

(Okay, the pond is so low, they were walking across dry land - never needed a fence on the other side before! :-) )
