Shark attack on Maui

Just read on CNN.com about a shark attack off of Kihei. Any updates from those in the area?

According to KHON news this evening, Kamaole beaches re-opened today and the victim is doing okay at a local hospital.

Is swimming 30-40 feet from shore considered "beyond the reef" in Kihei((?))

Hope and [-o< for the victim.

In Hawaii, "beyond the reef", means exactly that. The reef is sometimes quite close to shore, other times far out.

Thanks for the updates Icuy and JohnD. So often you see the sensational headline then hear nothing else.

The 'victim' was from Canada so this is getting quite a bit of airtime up here. It seems he was bit in the leg (about an inch from the scrotum area) and also on a hand. He is apparently going to be OK. I heard a quote on the local news that he is saying that a shark bite will not keep him from going back into the ocean! Apparently this happend on Kameolli beach number 2 - pretty scary!
