Shared Room

I plan on looking at a place near Washington square park/NYU, and the rent is pretty cheap for the area, but I have to share it with someone else. I get my own bedroom though. What should I do?? Should I be weary :0

There's a survey on this board that has your name written all over it.

SusanM Jan 6th, 2015 06:25 AM

Well if you're weary you probably will need a room.

If you saw it posted on craigslist - RUN - do not walk - away from it.

If you decide to go for it make sure that everything agreed to is in writing. If you get a lease - read it carefully before signing. Any additional agreements to the lease should also be in writing. Avoid paying rent (or any other charges to or for the landlord) in cash unless you will get a detailed receipt. Pay by check whenever possible.

I bring all this up because too many people get screwed because they don't put things in writing. Courts do not accept most things that are done as oral agreements.

"When you’re weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;
I’m on your side. When times get rough
And affordable aparments just can’t be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down."

The answer to your last question is either yes or no, depending on the accomodation and roommate, and strangers can't give you a flat answer. But I mostly agree with what the last guy said. If it's a craigslist ad there's a good chance of winding up with a drug dealer and/or porn video producer as a roommate. :)

Assuming this is a long term rental, not a vacation rental.

vjpblovesitaly Jan 6th, 2015 09:18 AM

Yes, this poster has been here before expressing his dismay that his parents won't pay for his aparment.

Wary - not weary. Consider buying a dictionary for the apartment.

Also - before paying anything review the original lease between the current tenant and the landlord so you understand the situation - and if you will be added to the landlord's lease or if you will a potentially illegal tenant.

I spoke to the man on the phone, and he is 70 years old, not a drug dealer :O But yes I will look at the place first, and if I like it, I will get everything in writing. I found it on spareroom.com Does anyone else (who isn't rude), have any experience with that site? :)

Tabernash2 Jan 6th, 2015 10:38 AM

No way would I share a room with a stranger.

clarkgriswold Jan 6th, 2015 11:30 AM

Clara is bored, laid up with a half-broken leg, and is posting as Dobby again. This could be fun.

I find it a challenge to share a room with a 65 year old man I've loved for almost 48 years. He snores and gets up multiple times in the night to use the bathroom. I certainly wouldn't want to share a room with a person I didn't love.

suze Jan 6th, 2015 02:59 PM

Doesn't matter what we think. Doesn't matter other people's experiences with that website.

Do YOU want to live with a 70 year old man you don't know?

suze Jan 6th, 2015 03:12 PM

Your title says "shared room". But you said you get your own bedroom. So isn't it a "shared apartment" instead?

nytraveler Jan 6th, 2015 04:05 PM

Well based on previous series of posts Dobby seems to be about 22 - can't imagine sharing an aprtment with a 70 yer old man. Am amazed that you don;t just find a share with one of the gazillion NYU students in the area.

suze Jan 7th, 2015 10:04 AM

Why don't you find a roommate? THEN look for an apartment to share together?
