Shanendoah Valley activities/hotels
 

My husband and I are planning a trip for his birthday. We're thinking of the Shanendoah Valley area. Any suggestions on nicer places to stay, things to do in surrounding towns? We have a few days. Thanks.

Where are you coming from?

Along the I-81 corridor, there is the new Shenandoah Valley museum in Winchester plus many Civil War sites if you are interested in that.

If coming from the north, get off the interstate in Strasburg and head south along route 11. The Hotel Strasburg (Circa 1905) in Strasburg is very nice and has very good food.

Route 11, a scenic byway, will take you through the small towns of Strasburg, Toms Brook, Woodstock, Edinburg, Mount Jackson and New Market.

Woodstock has the Woodstock Tower off Tower Rd that overlooks the Valley and the seven bends of the Shenandoah River. The 1795 and still in use county courthouse is also in Woodstock. There is currently construction around it as the old town section is being renovated with brick walkways etc.

The Publix House Restaurant in New Market is excellent, but pricey. The New Market Battlefield museum is very interesting.

From New Market, you can continue south through the valley to Staunton and Roanoke or take route 211 to Luray to visit the famous caverns there. You can also get on Sky Line Drive about halfway between New Market and Luray from route 211.

If you are into canoeing, there is an excellent outfitter in Luray to rent canoes from. They also rent cabins aong the river. (South Fork of the Shenandoah River) The canoe trip from Luray to the get out point is pure beauty, and an easy ride.

ronkala, that sounds like a nice long weekend kind of trip. I have always driven through those areas but it's never been our destination.

We stayed at the Jordan Hollow Inn www.jordanhollow.com. We enjoyed it and loved the restaurant. It has been a few years since we were there so I can't comment on its current status
