Shall we do Santa Monica Pier from Hermosa or Universal City?

Will be splitting up our trip between Hermosa Beach and Universal City. The boys want to go to Santa Monica Pier and wondering about the traffic problems. Which would be better to go from when we are at Hermosa Beach or Universal City?

I would say probably from Hermosa. You can just drive through Marina Dey Rey, Venice Beach, etc to get to Santa Monica. Don't even need to get on the freeway unless it's the middle of the day, then it might be faster. Make sure to get a map because highway 1 changes names alot. Coast Hwy becomes Sepulveda, becomes Lincoln into Santa Monica. But I am sure your boys would like stopping in Venice Beach as well.

Since you are splitting up your trip, why not just stop in Santa Monica when you are going between Hermosa and Universal City.

Okay, you are probably tired of hearing from me by now, but here are my 2 cents worth.

From Hermosa, I would take a route that more closely hugs the coast, instead of the freeways or hwy 1. This route takes you through downtown Manhattan Beach and right along the ocean in El Segundo:
Hermosa Ave. to Manhattan Ave. to Highland Ave. which turns into Vista del Mar to Culver, joining up with Hwy 1, (which is called Lincoln at that point) in Marina del Rey, continuing up to Santa Monica. Check it out on google maps.

It might be slow going in some spots, but the sights are much more interesting than the strip malls that line PCH/Sepulveda.

lvk-That is definitely a better drive. I have a hard enough time explaining the name changes on Hwy 1 so could never explain the route you just described. But it's a good fun and you can avoid Sepulveda.

If they stopped in Venice Beach on the way, then they could just take Main St into Santa Monica. I love that section of Main St-I guess it's actually in Santa Monica-cute shops, etc.

Paula, That route used to be part of my daily commute when I lived in Hermosa.

oops, Posting at the same time. Yes, that would also be nicer than Lincoln. After MDR, take a left from Lincoln onto Washington then head north on Pacific thru Venice into Santa Monica.
