Hi mwessel, I have had friends take the taxi from SFO into downtown SF and they have never been charged extra for more than one passenger. It is a flat rate. I tried to get the SFO website for you, but it is not working right at the moment.

Hello again mwessel, here is the website regarding taxis from SFO. You will note that the rates are metered rates and include up to 5 people.

Having done this many time, I vote taxi. Advantages:
1. You do not have to schlep yourself and bags to the airport tram station
2. You do not have to ride the airport tram to the BART station
3. You do not have to get out of the BART station to ground level
4. You do not have to walk from the BART station to your hotel.
5. For four, actually cheaper than the $64 plus tip for Super Shuttle ($16 each)

Seamus....seems my sence of adventure (to take BART) has flown out the window in the face of your list of solid reasons to hail a cab!!!! And flamom, your scenerio is not what I had in mind for the start of an awesome vacation! I think taxi wins!
Thank you loveitaly for taking the time to get the link for me. I had browsed their site but missed that.
Once again I am rewarded with expert and precise advice you can't get in a guidebook. thanks to all!

You are most welcome mwessel. I am not surprised you could not find the info. SFO has revamped their website and not for the better. It is not as user friendly as it was.
Wishing you four a beautiful time in SF. And taking a taxi will start your visit in a relaxing and comfortable manner.

Have fun! San Francisco is great.
My family was not very happy with our little excursion. Not having public transportation at home I jump at the opportunity to use it, but this was not the right time.
