SF to Yosemite
I'm still planning my fall trip to SF and Yosemite. After advice from an earlier post, we've decided to go to Yosemite for three days, then do our week long SF vacation. My question: How do we get to Yosemite? We plan to arrive at SF airport but I'm not sure if we should rent a car and drive to Yosemite, take a bus, or train and bus. Any thoughts? Do we need a car once we are in Yosemite? I've already made reservations for Curry Village. Thanks.

You don't need a car in Yosemite Valley itself or to access Glacier Point. But others will have to tell you how to get there via public transportation.

Amtrak goes there--I belive via train then bus. I would probably rent a car but it is very doable without.

I would rent a car. Getting there by public transportation is doable though. Amtrak has bus service from SF to Yosemite - I think you would have to take BART (commuter train) from SFO into SF and pick up the Amtrak bus there, then change buses in Merced.

Thanks for the help. I'll plan on renting a car at the airport. It doesn't sound like there's an easy way of getting to Yosemite by bus or train from SF.

There is a connecting Amtrak bus from SFO airport to Embarcadero Amtrak, and maybe even to Emeryville, I don't know how often, how convenient.
From Embarcadero Amtrak there is a very dependable bus connection with Emeryville train station. To get there from the airport, if no buses, use BART to Embarcadero station, about 1 block away. A connecting bus will be waiting for you at Merced train station. This bus has 2 stops: Yosemite View Lodge in El Portal and Yosemite Lodge - in the valley. How to get from there to Curry Village? Maybe a shuttle? You see, so many transport changes, and you're losing time on those stops, as much as I enjoy the public transportation, if you can read a map and get to Curry on your own, maybe it's better to rent a car? |
I just thought of another option... Greyhound? I have no idea if it's even going to Yosemite, but their buses are everywhere, just check their website, it won't hurt.
