SF to Yosemite

We're planning a trip for late May and would like to fit in a visit to Yosemite. Is that a good time to visit Yosemite? We would like to drive from SF, stay overnight in Yosemite, and then drive to Sonama area. How long does it take to drive from SF or Sonama area to Yosemite? Would it be worthwhile going to Yosemite if we only had a day to visit?

yosemite is fabulous---everyone should see it---may might not be bad----i don't know when they open the roads throughout the park (many are closed in winter)--but it's more spectacular to go when the roads are open--even if they aren't go---it's ab it of ahike from sf to yosemite--i would urge you not to try across sf to yosemite in rush hour--if you miss rush hour it will take about 4 hours--i would urge to stay in the park--the ahwanee ifs nice and very expensive--adn there is a more motel like place where the rooms are more reasonbly priced

The roads from SF to Yosemite are open year round. Tioga pass closes for the winter after the first heavy snowfall and reopens usually by Memorial day or earlier if there has been a low snow level. This should not affect your visit to the valley floor. You will be entering from the west entrance if you come from SF. Sonoma is north of SF and Yosemite is southeast. From SF to Yosemite is about 4 hours, as is Yosemite to Sonoma. Yosemite waterfalls will be quite full in May and should be spectacular.

I live in the bay area and I couldn't imagine driving from SF to Yosemite and the next day driving from Yosemite to Sonoma. Yes, both drives can be done in something less than 5 hours but you will do a bit of backtracking. How long are you in SF? Sonoma is only an hour away from SF. Can you change things around and give yourself more time in Yosemite? At this rate you won't be there for 24 hours. Also, be sure you have reservations for in the park as they are hard to come by all year round. Either way, Yosemite is always worthwhile! Good luck!

don't miss the 360 degree view from sentinel dome in yosemite (off of the glacier point road). it's a reletively easy hike of 1-2 hours (1.3 miles, a little uphill at the dome) and a better sunset view than glacier point!
