As far as San Diego, here are my suggestions. I would stay in the Del because it is located at a great beach for kids (if they get tired, one can go into the room while the other can still play). If you plan on only doing the beach a little then stay at the other place. In coronado go to mootime ice creamery on orange avenue (the location inside the del is twice as much) great ice cream and all homemade. There is coronado brewery on orange and miguel's mexican which my kids enjoy. plus a farmer's market is the ferry landing on tuesday afternoons. Also you can rent bikes there with baby seats for touring the island. Peohe's (great coconut shrimp) and Il'Fornaio are at the ferry landing which my kdis enjoy plus great views fo san diego. For something different you can take the ferry from here over to downtown san diego.
For kid friendly food in san diego-Corvette Diner in Hillcrest (50's hamburger joint, waitresses in costume, milkshakes), Point Loma Seafood (fish market with a great take-out counter right on the water-Al Michaels during super bowl said this was his favorite san diego place). Near Point Loma Seafood is Pizza Nova (another kid place pasta and pizza place) In Little Italy, Fillipi's (a chain in san diego that gives our kids pizza dough to play with while we eat. In Old Town you children might like Casa Del Pico and Old Town Mexican Cafe (try the carnitas) Coldstone Cremery is across from Old Town for ice cream. Now get your Mother-in-law to babysit and take your wife to the Marine Room in La Jolla. A very romantic spot that has been around for 60 years, huge picture window where the waves splash again the windows with fantastic foods.
Definitely do the zoo, sea world and maybe legoland if you have the time. Hope this helps,V.
