SF restaurants downtown (vegetarian friendly)
My husband and I really excited about our upcoming trip to San Fran and vegas next week.. We will be staying at the Hyatt on Embarcerido (sp?) downtown. I'm looking for suggestions on vegetarian friendly (no seafood please :) )restaurants...in that area.. We love Italian, Chinese, Thai, Indian... pretty much anything! lol. Nothing too expensive but must be tasty.. I woukd like to stay away from large chain like rwestaurants and instead try some local cuisine.
suggestions for Soup/Sandwich/salad type places for lunch are also welcome!! thanks! |

So many people who live here are vegetarians and/or semi-vegetarians, you will have no trouble finding restaurants to satisfy you.
I recently took some vegetarian friends to one of our favorite SF Chinese places: Eliza's. They were very happy! Eliza's 2877 California St. (@Divisadero St.) San Francisco, CA 94116 415-621-4819 There is a second location in Potrero Hill, equally good food, equally delightful decor. From Gayot: "Eliza's updates Hunan and Mandarin cuisine with a California twist but manages not to lose any of the hot, sweet or pungent flavors. Standards like kung pao chicken and Mongolian beef share billing with mango ostrich, Hunan lamb, and salmon with asparagus. The vegetable soup---a bowl full of fresh seasonal veggies in a peppery vegetable broth---makes a light and healthy starter. The ambience matches the food with dramatic vases of freshly cut flowers, giant decorative gourds, and impressionist-style paintings. The bar is a piece of artwork in itself---a meandering slab of clear Plexiglas featuring a three-dimensional blown-glass underwater world where cartoonish glass koi fish appear to be swimming through feathery purple and green kelp and bluish bubbles. With 30-plus lunch specials mostly under $5, Eliza's also proves that you don't have to drive up prices for a sleek interior and high-quality food. Service is efficient but a bit aloof." |
Here's an old thread with some fun suggestions:

Highly recommend Millennium, mentioned above. We're not vegetarians, and enjoyed our meal there (just last week)immensely.
