SF: Parking near Union Square (cheaper alternative?)

Hi. I'm driving up to San Francisco this weekend and spending one night at the Westin St. Francis. Until recently, I lived in SF and know the Union Square area well but always avoided driving or parking there (wisely, I think).

Parking at the St. Francis is $45/night. Any suggestions for a less expensive alternative nearby? Even better if it's close but just outside Union Square so we don't have to fight too much traffic. I know a handful of SOMA lots but we'll have luggage.

What about that lot at 5th and Mission? Too far? I think it's probably around $25/day. Not cheap, but better than the St. Francis.

Another alternative if you don't have much luggage would be to park in one of the neighborhoods near MUNI Metro, since permit parking is not effect on weekends. Otherwise I think your best bet for safe overnight parking its 5th and Mission. Not sure I would want to leave my car in any of the open SOMA lots overnight. And for those of you reading this and seeing the word "safe" and thinking SF must be dangerous for people. I mean safe for the car i.e. will not get broken into.

There's a big lot about a block from there (O'Farrel and ???) that has a $30 hotel special. It's a city lot, across the street from the Hilton Hotel.

Thanks for the ideas. Muni probably isn't worth the trouble this trip. 5th/Mission is where I used to always park. I guess it is a pretty straight shot up Powell. The O'Farrell garage sounds promising. Anyone else have an idea of the cross street? Union Square traffic is such a battle field. I hate to approach it unprepared.

Just be sure your per day lots include overnight - or you might end up paying for two days - which could end you right back with the $45/night option.

For convenience I'd probably just pop for the parking at the hotel.

Fifth & Mission is raising prices 4/1. Looks like 12-24 hours is $22.

But remember, there's no in and out privs.

I just did a Yahoo Map, It's 300 Mason Street (at O'Farrell). It's a several story garage and is always attended. The parking spots are nice and big.
