SF, Palo Alto, and maybe Half Moon Bay? GTG?

Hi all! Thanks again for the previous help. I am considering 2 days in Half Moon Bay while in the Bay area, and not sure if this is worth taking on. I would like to be by the ocean for a couple of days. any hotel recommendations along the coast? What kind of nightlife?

My travel to SFO is Wed. to Tues. I'll be in Palo Alto Fri.-Sun for a wedding. This gives me 2 days before and 2 days after the wedding to explore the area.
Renting a car at the airport for the week would be convenient, but is parking in SF really difficult?and $$$ parking fee in hotel?

Are my fodorite friends in SF interested in a get together? I don't know of any good place to meet, suggestion please.

I'm not sure where you're staying in San Francisco (ARE you staying in San Francisco?) but hotel parking tends to range from $35-$50 a night. There are a few garages where it will be a few $$ less expensive. If you're going to San Francisco BEFORE you head down to Palo Alto, I would just take BART into the city and when you're ready to leave, rent the car. Some posters have had good luck at the Dollar rental place on O'Farrell (near Union Square). It's usually less expensive to rent in the city because at the airport you pay extra fees.

As for nightlife, do you mean in Half Moon Bay and environs? If so, the answer is "you don't go to HMB and environs for the night life "

When are you here? There is a GTG in Palo Alto in July - the thread is in the Lounge.

What are your dates? We are having a lunch shindig in downtown PA on July 11 at 1 pm at Il Fornaio. Will you be here then?

The BeachHouse just north of Half Moon Bay is a nice spot. Many of the rooms have a front on view of the water.

The only other place I am familiar with is the Cypress Inn, which is a nice b and b right on the ocean just north of town.

Why don't you head down to Carmel for a night or two. It is really not that far a drive and it is so lovely.

oh! I'll miss the July 11 get together! oops!! My trip is 15th - 21st, in PA 17th-19th. leaving SF morning of 21st. WOW one week off !
I have not booked SF or HMB hotels, yet; trying to figure out where/when to get the rental car.
If I go to SF first, as sf7307 mentioned, rent the car when I am ready to go to PA, then from PA, I'll have the car to HMB, and then back to SF (return the rental car) for Monday night. Take the BART tues. morning to airport. Sound like a plan!
iamq, thanks for the HMB suggestions.
I'll check out Dollar Car Rental. I've used Enterprise here. it is OK.
I keep putting off the hotel search... better get on with the plan!

nancy, if your return flight leaves early, you might want to return the car to SFO (if there isn't a big dropoff fee), and just stay at the airport. There are plenty of hotels of all varieties and * levels, and lots of restaurants in downtown Millbrae, Burlingame and San Mateo.

sf7307, I am also thinking of reversing the order: go on to MHB first, then to SF on Mon. can't decide!!

I found Carmel-by-the-Sea on the map. Is that same as Carmel? That is farther than I want to travel, as I have only 2 days.

Nancy, we sometimes go to Monterey/Carmel for the day (we live north of Palo Alto). It's not very far at all (maybe 1-1/2 hours from where I live?).

Well, it turns out that I'll be in SF only Wed-Thur mid day, and then back to SF Mon afternoon. Really wish I could be in PA on July 11 to meet everyone!
Is it still possible to arrange a meeting for Wed or Mon? (July 15 or 20) Anyone interested? I am not familiar with any good restaurant or coffee shop, etc., but thinking that maybe there are many choices in the Ferry Building? Is this building open in the evenings?

Restaurants in Ferry Building are opened for dinner even if some stores are closed.

I am going to be away from the 14th until the 20th, so I can't make a GTG. Have a great visit to our wonderful Bay Area!
