SF -- Hotel help?
 

First trip to San Francisco and trying to decide between the Westin St Francis, the Hotel Monaco and the W. Which would be best? Or do you have any other suggestions? Like to stay around $150-200 per night.

We'll (late 40's couple) be staying 2 nights there and 2 nights in the wine country Memorial Day weekend.

Definately Hotel Monaco. Great boutique hotel with tons of character right in the heart of the city.

I second the Monaco. Great hotel and close to everything!

Ditto Budman. Learn to bid on Price Line and save a lot of money on your hotel. There are some great PL deals in SF. You'll have more $$ to spend on wine when you visit the wine country!

I have stayed at the Westin and the Monaco, but not the W so I can't comment on that one. The Westin has a big glitzy lobby and very comfortable beds. Last time I was there, the beds were done up in crisp white linens, very inviting. Nothing else about the room was particularly unique or outstanding and the bathroom was old, but good shower. This was a deluxe type room. The rooms can be spacious to tiny so you might want to specify. I prefer the boutique type hotels like the Monaco. I like the European feel, styled beds with interesting colors and decor. It was a smaller room than the Westin and no big glitzy lobby. But lots of character and charm. You can even borrow a goldfish if you want the homey touch in your room. Nice beds, triple sheets and nice bath products. There is a complimentary wine and cheese hour each evening accompanied by neck and shoulder massages and tarot card readings - maybe just on the weekends. If you want one of these, sign up quickly. I also liked the Grand Cafe restaurant which is in the same building as the Monaco. I would always choose the Monaco over the Westin, but that is because I like more unique hotels.
