SF: Haas-Lilienthal House

Anybody have any rants or raves or good to know stuff about this place?

Interested in best time to visit, visit duration, nearby sights/attractions I could combine with it, and how to get there via public transportation.

Is it on Gough St? It may be lines 1, 2, 3, 4 MUNI. I don't know where this house is, street and cross street.

OK, I looked it up, Franklin between Washington & Jackson. Buses 12, 27, 1, 19, 76(sundays only), 47, 49 - you can ride all day :)

How come you haven't asked about Twin Peaks? Coit Tower? Castro and Haight-Ashbury?

Hi ChatNoir,

I can highly recommend the H-L House, as I am sitting in it at this very moment!

It is a house museum, but not totally Victorian. Contents include furniture and decor from 1886 (when it was built), to 1972, when it was donated by the owners. Tours include a little SF history, architecture, and the story of the Hass-Lilienthal family.

Hours are Wed & Sat Noon to 3:00, and Sun 11:00 to 4:00. Docent-led tours last about 1 hour. No reservations needed. Address is 2007 Franklin Street, just past Washington. Franklin runs parallel to Van Ness (it is the next street west of Van Ness), so you can take any of the Muni lines that run on Van Ness. I believe they are the 47 and 49 lines. Exit at a stop near Jackson or Washington (depending on your direction) and walk one block west. You can also take the California Street cable car to the end of the line at Van Ness, walk one block up to Franklin and turn right, then about 4 blocks to the House.

It is not too far from Ghirardelli Square and the Cannery, so you could combine with those. These 2 sites are close to the northern end of Van Ness, so you could hop back on the bus to get there.

Hope that helps!

One more thing: It is a good idea to call the week of your visit to make sure there are no changes to the schedule. The House is rented out for weddings, events, etc., so sometimes it may close a bit earlier to allow caterers to set-up. Any changes to schedule will be noted on the Tour Information Line: 415-441-3004
