SF Culture Bus?

What's the best way to get from Bush & Powell to the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park - the new 74X, N line, something else?

How about to the de Young Museum?

This would be on either a Sunday or Monday morning, returning late afternoon.

If you want to use Culture Bus, it's a new thing for tourists, you pay $7 for an all-day pass. It runs from Union square to Golden Gate park stopping at deYoung - this is where I saw it. Academy is across from deYoung.

I think that bus has limited hours, check Muni website.

The least walking for you is to catch bus # 2 on Sutter (1 block away from Bush) to 6th Ave, bus 44 around the corner, in the park the first stop is by deYoung.

If you want to walk all the way to Market/Powell (or maybe Montgomery/Market, another N stop) get off at 9th Ave and walk through the park to both museums.

There is also Japanese Garden next to deYoung if you're interested.

I don't mind walking a bit. Transfers are usually inefficient - you have to wait for two buses instead of one.

The 74X runs about every 20 minutes. $7 also gets you a reduced museum admission price

Any advantage to the N (other than cost)?

The Japanese Garden is definitely on the list.

Any advantage to the N (other than cost)?

No. At least none I can think of.

Showing your bus transfer also gets you a discount. The advantage to the N is that it is faster than a bus. If the 74 makes very few stops, it should be relatively fast also. But I would check to make sure that it is not $7 each way. Regular MUNI is $1.50, .50 for seniors, which would be considerably cheaper.

For one special event fare you can ride all day, getting on and off as many times as you like. Some museums give discounts when you show your special transfer. Then continue to use your special event fare transfer on Muni bus, Metro, and historic streetcar service (cable cars not included) for the rest of the day.

Special Event fares:
$7 for adults, age 18-64.
$5 for seniors, ages 65+; disabled persons (valid ID required); and youths, ages 5-17.
$3 for all persons with a valid Muni pass, Passport or pass equivalent.
Children under 5 are free.
