SF and Monterey next month

My wife and I are going to fly to San Francisco next month ( via Oakland Airport). We're staying in SF for four days then driving down to Monterey area for three days before coming home. Should we rent a car for the whole week or just the last three days when we go down the coast? What would you recommend for the SF stay? We want to see Muir Woods and Napa. Where would you recommend staying in Monterey (B&B?) and and what would you recommend for day trips? We are both active like to walk and in our early 50's. Thanks.

I would absolutely recommend a trip to Point Lobos, just a 20 minute drive south of Monterey. It's one of the most beautiful state parks in the entire country. Here are some of my photos from Point Lobos:

I'm not familiar with Monterey B&Bs. Here's a link to Pacific Grove B&Bs: http://www.pacificgrove.org/dirpages/bedbreakfast.htm

We did the same trip but we then went on to Santa Barbara and further. I want to say we stayed in SF for 3 nights. We did not rent a car until we headed to Muir Woods and Napa for a day trip and the next day we left for Monterey. SF has pretty good public transportation options so it was easy to get around and see things. We bought a 3 or 4 day pass that you can use on the trolleys, bus and I think maybe one other thing (lightrail kind of thing?). We stayed at the Fisherman's Wharf Marriott where we could walk to the trolley and bus stop. I would definitly stay near one of those. We also just walked a block or so to Hertz to pick up our rental car. I love V. Sattuii Winery near/in St. Helena for a picnic but it can be a little busy. We hit Muir woods in the morning and then went on to Napa. It's pretty much a day's worth so I would head back to SF instead of on to Monterey. We stayed at the Spindrift Inn. I read some slightly negative reviews but it actually wasn't too bad. I liked the location which is just down from the Aquarium and there are wood burning fireplaces in the rooms with nice ocean views. That drive is fantastic with the craggy coastline!

The MARITINE INN in PG is outstanding. Check it out on the web.
