Seward precruise itinerary help
 

My husband, 14 yr old son and I will be taking a cruise out of Seward this summer:

1. Land in Anchorage in around 6PM. Stay overnight in Anchorage.

2. Take noon train to Seward arriving in Seward late afternoon. Overnight Seward

3. Sightseeing boat Kenai. Overnight Seward

4. Exit Glacier and Kenai National Park. Overnight Seward.

5. Cruise ship leaves at 5pm (I think).

Is this too much time in Seward? Not sure what to do on the last day before we board the ship. We are flexible. My son and husband would prefer sightseeing rather than museums. Also, they don't want any more hotel changes as they dislike packing and unpacking. I'd love to go to Denali but my husband and son hate long bus or train rides. Any comments or ideas would be appreciated.

Why not spend another night in Anchorage before going to Seward? You could take an excursion, if you prefe, to Portage Glacier. There are some good side trips from Seward, but three nights there seems more than ample. On most cruise ships, you can board after noon on the day of departure.

First off there is no "noon" train to Seward, it leave 0645 and arrives after 11am. What are your "Kenai National Park" plans?? Are you looking at the day hike of the Harding Ice Field?? There isn't anything else accessable, Exit Glacier at most is a couple hours. Your cruise ship departs around 9pm, not 5pm, so you could do your Kenai Fjords boat tour that day with no problem if needed.

If there is a noon train, it would be a cruise ship contracted train only. As already said, you can catch the regular train run from Anc at 6:45 am and get to Seward at 11:05. This still allows you to take the 11:30 Kenai Fjords tour or wait until the next day to take the tour. The train ride down to Seward is nice and scenic, you just can't stop or pull over like you can with rental car.
Exit Glacier is the only part of Kenai Nat'l Prk you can walk to and 1-2 hrs will give you time to see it. Seavy Family Dog Kennel tour and ride is nice and on same road as Exit Glacier. There isn't a whole lot extra to do there unless you go fishing.

And if it is a cruise contracted train, it will cost twice as much as the regular Alaska RR.

And cruise contracted trains only run the single day of sailing, so it won't be available to you.

A few other things to do in Seward: the Sealife Center - great museum, probably about 1-2 hours. Make sure to fill out their survey as you get a free gift in the giftstore! Hike the Cain's Head trail - gorgeous scenery, but you have to time it right to make sure you don't get stuck out at low tide. Go sea kayaking - you should be able to find a vendor that will pick you up.

I agree go to Mitch Seavey's sled dog kennel...it was a highlight for our teens last summer. Sea Life Center is nice too.
