September trip to Sante Fe?

Hi! Two active seniors... from New Jersey.....planning to visit Sante Fe for 3-4 days in September.....We have not been to this part of the USA before. Where else should we go - reasonably close? We are open to anything....using a rental car or plane. We can be away for up to another week.

Is there a specific time in September to visit Sante Fe?
Which airport should we fly into?

Thanks so much!!!!

Are you asking where to go in addition to the 3-4 days?

Lots of options nearby - Taos, ABQ, Colorado...

What are your interests?

If you are interested in Native American history, go to Bandelier National Monument, about an hour west of Santa Fe.
If the elk are in rut, head a little farther west and visit Valles Caldera.
Check the festival times and visit Taos and Taos Pueblo.
Hike a bit in Tent Rocks SP.

Thank you for your time!
Yes, we are asking where else we can go for another week or so.
We are really not too outdorsy, (but like scenic vistas) We are more interested in different cultures, the daily lives of people. We are in good physical condition, and are hoping to add another Don't Miss tourist site.

Yes, Santa Fe and Taos sound like perfect places to visit in addition to this third location we are attempting to learn.
Is it too late to plan for this coming September???

We are more interested in the daily lives of different cultures..... dramatic vistas ....festivals....COLOR.....We are active seniors but not big on rugged, long hikes. We might try a balloon ....

Santa Fe and Taos sound great. We are attempting to find a third location.....

Thanks so much for your time!!!

Acoma pueblo is amazing
Bisti badlands are beautiful
Old Town Albuquerque, Petroglyph Park, the Museum there, all well worth a visit
Take a drive to Las Vegas (NM), check out the newly refurbished Harvey hotel in the train depot area and vintage buildings there, the lovely old plaza, a town full of pre-USofA history (plus nearby hot springs)

If you click my name and then click "view public profile" you will find several trip reports for this area. The 2013 one we did with friends might be of interest.

Flying into Albuquerque and renting a car makes the most sense for a short trip. Take the turquoise trail one way from/to Santa Fe.

We visited Santa Fe last October and loved it. Weather was colder than we expected, so be prepared.
We loved the hotel La Fonda on the Plaza:

We stayed three nights and took one day-trip to Taos.

Favorite restaurant in Santa Fe was Cafe Pasqual’s

See of you can visit some of the Pueblos between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. We did that years ago. Each Pueblo has it’s signature form of jewelry design.
We love Taos too and have stayed there several times. For another week you could head towards Mesa Verde NP or fly to Phoenix and drive an hour and a half north to Sedona with it’s beautiful red rock formations. Stay at Enchantment Resort there.
It will be still be too hot to visit much of the South West in September. Santa Fe, Taos and Sedona are at high altitudes so much cooler.

If you wait and go in October, you'll have more chance of seeing fall color. The timing varies every year, but you can google and see predictions for this year.

We also love Cafe Pasquale’s.
