Sept in GNP and GTTS Rd?
DH and I planning a trip for 9/07. Fly to SLC, drive thru WY, MT, Banff, ID, back to SLC. Probably 4 weeks. Won't spend time in Yellowstone or Teton NP bcs we've done that a few times. Can leave anytime (both retired) but prefer after Labor Day due to less traffic and would rather not have to make reservations way in advance and maintain a somewhat flexible sched. Biggest concern is Going-to-the-Sun Rd about the 2nd week in Sept. Never been to GNP or MT. Know it can snow anytime there but is the rd "usually" open at that time or should we plan to hit it a week or more earlier?
Thanks, isy |
It was closed when we were there in JULY due to snow!!!! It did open later in the afternoon.
I hope you get positive responses about September...I don't have a clue. Happy Trails! |
Going to the Sun Road is closed now due to damage. (Maybe snow too). They had 11 inches of rain on top of a foot of snow and the road washed out in 2 or 3 places. They claim to have it done by June but I have my doubts. Keep an eye on the NPS web site.
Its still worth going regardless. The area around Many Glacier and Swiftcurrent is spectacular. Its on the East side. You can take the road around the park and get to the west side. You'd miss GTTSR and Logan Pass but would see a lot of spectacular scenery. We were there in July and stayed at Swiftcurrent. We put pictures and a trip report on our website if they might help. www.alandsuejohnson.com click on the bison picture |
Since you've seen G.Tetons an Yellowstone wouldn't it be better to try to start from say Kallispell MOntana close to Glacier N.Park.Or better still, since you have 4 weeks;start from Seattle or Vancouver then on to Jasper and then down Colmbia icefields to Banff, Waterton lakes and the n the Going to the sun road ending in Kalispell or driving to Seattle.Paul

I was drooling out the window at Kalispell and Flathead Lake...wanted to stop and we were out of time....good suggestion!
|
Thanks. Will think about starting from Seattle. Planned to do Kalispell anyway. Coming from Boston so SLC just seemed easier. Also thinking about the Beartooth Highway in WY. Thanks for the suggestion.
