Sept 11th commemoration
 

Has anyone begun to think how they will or would like to see the 11th remembered this year. I live in a small town in Nj and will be meeting w/ a committee in a few weeks, would welcome others opinions and suggestions, much thanks -

I think a national moment of silence at the time the first plane hit would appropriate.

Close the Malls, close the schools, close the courts, the libraries - let each community / town come together for that moment of silence (great idea USA.USA) it's not a business as susual day - and I don't mean to promote the image that we are closing because of fear - but least we forget - I live in NYC and I cannot imagine going to work that day -

Amen to the moment of silence. Let the anniversary be honorable, respectful, sensitive and not too long-winding. And please cut down the political grandstanding. Then politicos should stop thinking about themselves for a day.

I think they should have 50% off sales at all major retail shops, car dealers would slash prices, and Hallmark would make new cards for the occasion.

Couldn't it be led by a non-politician? Let's also ask that doctor in Elk Grove what prayers he finds least offesive!

I'd like to see it made a national holiday, frankly. Here in NY, people are still mourning and still trying to get their lives back on track. It will be an extremely sad, emotional day for us here, and probably always will be.

Certainly begin with silence, and conclude with it as well, but in between why not a more festive occasion, with music and dancing and laughter - for the obvious reasons. Terrorists sought to take away our spirits and liveliness and love, and impose their wasteland of feelings and empty life force. Their shameful acts should not be replicated or reflected in our special day. Lets not be silent or angry that day, lets not be like the terrorists imagine life. They are empty, angry fools and will dry up and vanish in time. Lets make September 11 flourish in ways that drive the terrorists into their holes.

If they make it a national holiday then for sure it'll turn into exactly what redneck above described.

as much as I hate to be right, it may soon come to these events eventually. First it will be a solemn note, then commemorative coins will be sold, then statues on QVC, next will be fragments of 9/11 buldings and paraphenlia. It's sad but true. Long live capitalism.

CM: I will start the day at the cemetary where I start every day since my husband died - i am not sending the kids to school, and I hope my town (also by the way in NJ) will do something - like a period of silence from the first plant to the third and then bells - A sale day to mark the death of my husband, his coworkers, the family members of so many??? what is wrong w/ you people? haven't we learned anything about what it means to come together as a nation! it is all about money - if so then those who took down the towers were right - my children's father was not collateral

Carole, it's hard to convey sarcasm sometimes in written form. I imagine at one time Memorial Day was a more solemn occasion but now it's just an excuse for a sale at the mall or grocery store. Get it?

I definitely think the day should be observed, and/but I am very concerned that in the spectacular enormity of the WTC disaster we will continue to forget those lost at the Pentagon and in Penn. <BR><BR>A full minute of silence across the country, perhaps with fire horns and church bells sounding, is a great idea but I think perhaps it should be at noon, because the moments at which people died were scattered over the whole morning (and, sadly, a few in the afternoon and even later).

To redneck and the others worried about exploitation of a 9/11 national holiday: yes, doubtless some sleazoids will try to make a buck on a tragedy, but that's human nature unfortunately. You can certainly say the same about Christmas, July 4 and Memorial Day, all of whcih are over-commercialized. But should we stop celebrating/commemorating those days because they're too commcerical? I don't think so. We can't not observe the single worst disaster to happen to the US just because some jerks will exploit it. Why not called it National Day of Remembrance. Bernadette, I think you mean "ringing" instead of "wringing". "Wring" as in 'wring out the water of a soaking wet towel.' "Ring" as in 'someone answer the telephone, it is ringing.'<BR><BR>September 11th, should be something very tasteful and very solemn, and possible celebrated in the same tone that the Jewish holidays, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are celebrated.
