Senior visiting Red Rock Canyon
 

Traveling to Las Vegas early July with a friend who doesn't want to leave the pool. I'd like to visit Red Rock Canyon but not fond of driving alone. Any thoughts about the best 4 hour tour company? Which trail is the easiest? I've got bad knees but want to see this site. Thanks for the help.

Pink Jeep Tours is the driving tour I hear recommended the most. It includes not only the paved 13 mile scenic drive, but an off road portion along Rocky Gap Road (which I believe used to be called Old Potato Road). Yes, it's called a road, but I'd never want to drive a regular car on it!

As to hiking: there are different kinds of tours offering hikes, some of which are easy, but in early July it's way too hot for me. The long term forecast for early July is even hotter than normal. While I'm a big believer in hiking at Red Rock Canyon, I'd probably go for a driving tour in July.

If you're bound and determined to go on a hike, the best guide is Neil Sobelson, of Hike This! ( http://www.hikethislasvegas.com/index.htm ). It's expensive for just one person, as all tours are private tours. The good part about a private tour is it's catered to you -- as hard or as easy as you like. Neil is very popular, so it may be difficult to reserve a tour with so little notice -- be prepared with alternate dates.

We are having record heat this summer here in the southwest; Vegas and Utah the same.

I would strongly urge to re-consider hiking in July, especially with bad knees. I am guessing you are not used to hiking and may not be in "peak" condition to do so.

I would look for tours that are in an air-conditioned coach that makes stops where you can get out and have a short walk about and look see.
