Senior Bus Fare NYC

Just posted and realized I didn't put NYC in my title. Sorry for the duplicate post, but, here is my question again: I read somewhere that Seniors ride for half price ($0.75) on the buses in NYC - is this true? Subways too? And do I need a special pass or just pay as I ride? Thanks for the information, Fran

It's true. You have to have appropriate ID, though. <BR>The MTA has information on its website about this: http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/fare/rfinfo.htm#who

Fran:<BR>Senior fare is $.75. Coins only for the buses. Subways you pay right at the token booth. Depending on how many times you plan to use the subway or bus in day you might be interested in a $4 Fun Pass. Good all day and you get the free bus to subway transfer which you do not get when you pay with cash. Hope this helps. <BR>The new website for NYC Transit is www.mta.info.

Senior bus and subway fare is 75 cents. You must show your medicare card and yoiur medicare card is the only proof of age accepted. I now have a photo id<BR>Metro card. Before I got the card the only id accepted was my Medicare card. I don't know that this policy has changed.

Or you could get a 7 day pass for $8.50 - it appears you must mail in an application, and perhaps have a special pass w/ photo. See <BR>http://www.mnr.org/nyct/fare/rfinfo.htm (no x in my eddress)

Hi, checked into your comments and yes, it's Medicare (oh, who would have thought . . . I hate to admit, but yes I qualify!) that is accepted or the photo ID for the $8.50 pass, which is a good deal, but my trip is in a matterr of a few days and I don't have time for the application to be processed, anyway for the amount I will ride, half price is just fine! Thanks again for everyone's help - I can't wait visit!

The above info is correct about showing your Medicare card. What hasn't been mentioned is that when you present your card at a token booth, you pay $1.50 for a token and chit which is good for the second subway trip. In other words and as far as I know, you can't just buy one token for 75 cents.

Howard, does it work the same for the bus? Thanks for the information - "travel talk" has been very helpful!

Howard Apr 15th, 2002 02:29 PM

I would think so, but I'm not sure!

annie Apr 15th, 2002 04:22 PM

Fran:<BR>you pay $.75 on the bus. Transfer to another bus is free. <BR>Token booth for subway. $1.50. Get a coupon for a return trip which you turn into the token booth for your return trip. You cannot use the coupon for use at the same subway station on the same day you bought it. You can however, use it for a trip on a bus instead of paying the $.75. Hope you are not too confused!

Just wanted to thank everyone for their advice. I was in town last weekend and had a wonderful time! Great theater, shops, restaurants and most importantly great people. Just wanted other "senior" travelers to know that the bus offered the .75 cent rate - no problem; showed the card only once, the rest of the time I dropped my coins into the slot and I think the gray hair said the rest!
