Sending currency to Europe

I know this isn't a travel question and it pertains to Europe, but everyone here seems to be pretty smart and helpful so I hope someone will have an answer for me.

I just found out that my niece, who is stationed in Germany, has eloped. We'd like to send her some money as a gift, but we aren't sure in what form to send it. Could she easily cash a personal check or should I look into something more convenient for her? I don't know how easy it is to get Euro's and it probably isn't a good idea to send cash through the mail anyhow.

Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated!

If she's stationed on a US military complex in Germany, a personal check should be fine. There are always US-based banking facilities at such places, and it shouldn't be a problem.

If you're sending traveler's checks, I would think you'd have the best luck with the American Express checks, but I'd ask them first and see what they say.

I don't believe in using traveler's checks for travel, especially in Europe, but for what you are talking about they are ideal. Get the traveler's checks in Euros at AAA (no fee and decent exchange rate) or at a bank (depending upon exchange rate) and send those.

I woul dsend her a $ personal or cashiers check. As already mentioned - every US or NATO military base has US affiliated banks. So that would be the easiest for both you and for the happy couple.

Don't bother w/ travelers checks (either $ or euro) since she will lose on the fees when she cashes them. if you send a $ chack she can just cash it or deposit it in her on base account.
