Self Guided Walking Tours for New Orleans?
I've never done this before but we've been New Orleans several times (former resident) and thought this might be a fun new way to wander the FQ and learn a thing or two.
Any suggestions on where I could find good self guided walking tours for New Orleans?
Thanks!
Lisa

Doesn't the National Park Service do walking tours of the FQ? They may have flyers or pamphlets for self-guided ones. I'd also check some of the guide books. I think the Dummies book for NOLA (which we found to be quite good) might have a walking tour. I can't find my copy or I'd check it and let you know.

We found some pretty good walking tours in the Frommers guide. Each tour had a map with numbers on it and each number corresponded to a point of interest with a short paragraph about it. We did the Garden District and St Charles streetcar tour.

The National Park offers a free tour of the FQ at 9:30 but I believe that you have to be there a half hour prior to the start of the tour.
Google "national park walking tour french quarter" but if memory serves me, I believe that you meet their office on Decatur Street.

As a general rule, if I want input from others about someplace, I come to Fodors. If I want guidebook type info, I go to Frommers. Over the years, I have found Frommers to have more indepth information and information about more places. Fodors does a good job of hitting the highlights though.

The National Park Service at 419 Decatur offers a free tour and more importantly WASHROOMS::French Quarter Visitor Center. Walking Tour: 9:30 a.m. First-come, first-served. Passes limited to one per person, must be picked up in person on day of tour. One mile of walking

Just wanted to say I agree with J Correa on Frommer's guide books. As I said above, we liked the Dummies one for NO (although not necessarily better than Frommer's). On the whole, Frommer's are the best. I think particularly for those traveling on a budget (or with kids). We've never been steered wrong by a restaurant suggestion in a Frommer's guide.
Also agree that this website is far, far better than Frommer's. Mostly because it's so much more active.
