Elisabeth- you don't want to stay in Oceanside. You won't have the feel of San Diego at all there. Even though it's high season, so to speak, with this economy you're in a position to bargain. Don't hesitate to CALL vacation rental companies.

We just returned from another of our San Diego visits - stayed at the Courtyard by Mariott Liberty Station due to the rate. It was lovely and would stay again.
Our previous visit we stayed at the Homewood Suites right next door - another great place and includes a full breakfast.
I would not stay in Oceanside for all those reasons listed above.
Any way I wish you the best and hope you will post a trip report and let us know how it all works out.

We stayed in a rental in La Jolla a couple of summers ago, with our 2 older teens, http://www.vrbo.com/70179.
It is a guesthouse on the owner's property. The owners were delightful, and let us use their beach chairs, umbrellas and boogie boards. They also let us use their washer/dryer. It's walking distance to some restaurants and a couple of large grocery stores as well. it's in a residential community, but not too far from the beaches and La Jolla Village.

To build on this post - what are people's thoughts on staying at Liberty Station as opposed to La Jolla.
My family and I stayed in Carlsbad for our annual So Cal vacation last year as it seemed to be good compromise for us (halfway between San Diego and Disneyland), but this year we have decided to stay for half the vacation in Anaheim and the other half down in San Diego.
Unfortunately, I am having difficulty remembering how long the drive was from La Jolla to downtown - I don't recall it as being a particularly long drive, especially since we don't need to drive in and out during rush hour, but if my memory is wrong, I would appreciate the advice.
Thanks.

(BTW - we will be in San Diego from Sept 26 - Oct 5 - flying in and out of SD)
Thanks.

janisf,
I think you nailed it and that is what I feared.
We'll get the rant when she comes back.
Terrence.
Liberty station Courtyard or Homewood suites is a great affordable place that is super central to everything and the rooms are new and suite style with views of the bay and downtown..plus free parking!
Liberty station to LJ is about 30 minutes, give or take.
Try Grande Colonial hotel in LJ.
Awesome place and you can get some deals around $200 or less.
perfect place to stay with ocean views and tons of excellent restaurants in the village.
expedia.com or direct

O my goodness! Janisj, you were right. I did think "mission accomplished" and just switched off. The thing is that I originally posted my request for info on behalf of my sister and her family. I didn't mention that fact in order not to complicate matters and because I expected just a few reactions. Meanwhile all you good people out there have been worrying about me and my family's welfare. My sister went ahead and booked the accommodation in Oceanside at the suggestion of her (Dutch) travel agent and I backed out. Now I don't now how to tell her that this may not be such a good choice after all. Thank you all again for your advice and I think I'll just have to share this with her and leave it to her to decide.

Geez, Oceanside? She would be better off staying at that place off of Mira Mesa Blvd someone asked about once. It's closer, and quieter in that "look honey, we're off the beaten path." Next to a businesspark.
