Hi,
is there any where in NYC that you can rentt or ride a segway.

Yuo can ride one anywhere except on the roads.

What's a segway? Is it some kind of scooter?

Here's a NY Times link. I'm not certain if you can use a Segway on the sidewalk.

Please don't. Segway riders are a major annoyance and danger on New York sidewalks. Yesterday on Lexington Ave I saw some fool on a Segway almost kill a toddler on a crowded sidewalk (at 86th Street).

Plus, "riders" look ridiculous.

Go to Paris instead. There are segway tours that meet under the Eiffel Tower. I think you can google "Mike's Bikes Paris" and find them.

Segways are a menace to pedestrians. How have you enjoyed "sharing" the sidewalks with bicyclists (who DO belong on the street)? Have you ever had someone run into you with a shopping cart at 1 mph? Think what it will be like being struck by a Segwidiot at 10 mph.

The things should be licensed, inspected & insured like scooters and motorcycles, and driven in the street. However the manufacturer, rather than spending money advertising, has been quietly lobbying state governments to change laws to allow this MOTORIZED vehicle on sidewalks.

Feet and Wheels do NOT mix.

I guess I should have contributed something besides opinion to the thread. I read a review awhile back about the Paris rentals. Riders (or more correctly, "Drivers") where given a considerable amount of "training" time before being "set free". They were warned that they might encounter some hostility from others (but did not) about using the device.

I'd love to try one out myself, but not on city streets and especially not on sidewalks ... and maybe that's your ("eclair") intention too. Sorry to sound like I was getting on your case. But I do think the advise given to those in Paris applies to other cities too: be prepared for some hostility.

No, you cannot ride the Segway on the sidewalks and you would be crazy to ride it in the streets. About 2 weeks ago, a cop "pulled over" a guy on a Seway on 6th Ave in the 50s. He told him he needed to ride it on the street. It would probably take you all of one minute to get hit by a cab.

While I also think Segways are an abomination, I can understand others might not share my view. However, I can not imagine using one on the sidewalks of NYC without being a menace - not built for those kind of crowds, despite what developer hopes.

Just a note - no vehicles are allowed on NYC sidewalks - not even bicycles. They are required to stay in the street - therefore it's ridiculous IMHO to try to ride one in Manhattan except in the Park. (There is an unoffical dispensation for little kids on bikes on the sidewalk - but only in residential areas - not midtown - where they would be trampled anyway.)

Before you judge people on segways, you should stop and realize that some of the segway "riders" are disabled and cannot get around without one. A friend of ours is an 18 year old young woman with a degenerative disease who would not be able to get around her college campus (except in a wheelchair) without a segway. It allows her some "normalcy" and the ability to keep up with her "walking" friends. A segway is not an "abomination" (Gail) to our friend, it's an unfortunate way of life. Gekko - sorry if you have to suffer "annoyance". You should feel so lucky. And her friends think that she looks beautiful, not "ridiculous" as a rider.

I've seen at least a few different selfish idiots on segways on Upper East Side sidewalks (all perfectly able-bodied).

And yes, they all looked <b>ridiculous</b> on their little toys.

KathyK: I'm glad this technology is available for someone like your friend to use on a college campus (I posted a link to a NYT article that discusses this very topic). But to use it on the streets or sidewalks of NYC could potentially make a bad situation for the disabled users worse and cause injury to innocent bystanders.

Lots of controversy surrounding the &quot;rights&quot; of bicyclist (Critical Mass protests) and pedestrians. Segway use is very grey area here in NY.

I wasn't suggesting that it was a good idea to use a segway on a crowded NY street or sidewalk but wanted to point out why it is necessary for some people to use them otherwise. It seemed that none of the posters were aware of the fact that they are the only way to get around for some people. They are not &quot;Toys&quot;. Gekko - may you be fortunate enough to never become disabled or have a disabled child. You;re incredibly insensitive.
