Houston

My husband and I will be travelling to Houston next year towards the end of may through to the 9th June. We plan on using Houston as our base. We have a cruise booked 4 the final week seeing us returning to Galveston on the 8th. What I would like to know , is what are the best places to visit. We will be hiring a car and are prepared to travel . I want to travel to San Antonio, Galvaston, Dallas, and Austin. If anyone can put together a proposed it itinerary that would be great

Houston as a base means a lot of driving to the other places you want to see. It would be much easier if you would move at least once, maybe twice, changing your base hotel
location(s) instead of sleeping in Houston each night. Texas is a huge state! It involves very long hours of driving to get from place to place.

Is your cruise from June 1-8? You can easily see Galveston, the day you return assuming you do so in the am. What day in May are you flying into Houston? After landing you should take off for San Antonio, followed by Austin, Dallas and back to Houston. You of course could reverse the loop if you would like. Let us know how many days you are working with and we will give you more help. Houston to San Antonio is about 3 hours. SA to Austin about 1. Austin to FW/Dallas about 3, Dallas to Houston about 4.

I don't know your interests, but your itinerary only has you visiting major cities. You'll get a much better feel for Texas if you get out into the country. I'd recommend a couple of days in Fredericksburg in the Hill Country. You could go there from San Antonio and then on to Austin.

I'm a bit confused. You say you are using Houston as your base, then list all these places that are hundreds of miles from Houston.

Houston is not a base to visit vast parts of Texas. You need to have multiple bases.

Thanks for your suggestions our cruise is from the 1st to the 8th. I actually meant that we fly in and out of Houston and are happy to travel and stay in different areas of Texas. We fly on the 21at May to Houston. We do want to see the country as well as the cities. Look forward to reading all suggested places of interest .

Friends from Germany always enjoy a stop in Fredericksburg TX. I've never been, but they love it.

Much of the Hill Country and Central Texas (slight geographical misnomer) between Waco and San Antonio was settled by German immigrants in the mid-1800s - primarily Rhinelanders and Bavarians seeking to get out before the Prussian neo-imperialists took over the whole bloody country.

Why fly into Houston if you want to travel around? Easy to fly into Dallas, visit it and Fort Worth, go to Lalaland on the Colorado River and on to Alamoville, then end up in Houston before your trip.

As for highlights of various small towns: googling will net more information.

May is a nice time to visit here. If I were to suggest an itinerary, it would be:

Houston to Austin via TX 290 . . most of the blooming wildflowers will be gone, but some will be there

Austin to Hill Country ( Fredericksburg ) via 290 again

Fredericksburg to San Antonio via TX 281 thru Johnson City ( slight backtrack )

San Antonio to Houston via I-10 to Seguin, Alt 90 thru Gonzales Shiner and up to Schulenburg, then I 10 to Houston to Galveston.

Houston Freeways can be very busy early in the morning and 4 - 6 PM so if you wanted to avoid that, stay on Alt 90 to Sugarland and take TX 36 to Galveston.

You can check out these places online and decide how much time you want to spend in each place, but this will give you a nice overview of Central/South Texas. It would be a good idea to buy a Texas Roadmap early in the trip.
