The best homemade donut, just like mom used to make, are at Muriel's Donuts in Lebanon, NH. I used to live within walking distance and loved to walk up on a Saturday morning and get them fresh out of the grease. It's a teeny little place - take out only - you can see them being made. Absolutely PERFECT donuts - good if bought in the store, but unbelievable if picked up fresh. Not too many local people even know that you can go in and get them fresh, they don't advertise the fact - you just have to know....
If you're looking for a hike in New England, the appalachian trail goes thru Hanover NH - Lebanon NH is only about 5 miles off the appalachian. Or there's lots of good small mountains nearby for day hike!

Where are the people who were typing FAT the other day? I guess they were right about plenty of slobby people here!

Oink Oink!!!!

It doesn't get much better than a hot Krispy Kreme doughnut and a good fresh cup of coffee. A couple of years ago Starbucks was actually thinking of selling KK doughnuts in their stores.

Bob's donuts in the Farmers Market, 3rd and Fairfax in Los Angeles/Hollywood.

Mmmmm....talk about fresh! You can smell them from a mile away every morning. The apple fritters are crisp and almost-burnt, just the way I like them. And right next door is a great homemade ice cream stand. Heart Attack City!

To the soul who thinks there are no Krispy Kremes in Canada, go to just outside of Toronto....there's a store there. I think the area might be called Mississauga, not sure.

The Donut Shop in downtown Grand Marais, MN makes wonderful donuts. I look forward to them whenever I am in MN. The donuts at The Donut Hole (you actually drive thru a huge donut) in La Puente, CA are also wonderful. And of course I love Krispy Kreme Donuts - they are fabulous, especially when hot!

I'm one of those strange people who thinks Krispy Kremes are too sweet! I was so excited when one opened near our house but really disappointed when I bought them--hot and fresh. We used to buy Winchell's in Pasadena, but they were pretty much like Dunkin Doughnuts. Try a search on Chowhounds.com

Kay's Bakery in Holyoke, MA has the VERY BEST boston creme donuts on this earth! The bakery is a little hole in the wall and if you get there early enough on a Saturday or Sunday morning the donuts are still warm! YUMMMMMM!

Atkins Farm in Amherst Mass. They make the best apple cider donuts. The farm happens to be located off a beautiful bike trail, during the fall it's a must see.

Tiny Toms available in Toronto at the CNE in late August only. You can watch them being made on a little donut grease conveyor, sprinkled with cinnamon or icing sugar and served up in a little white bag.
I hate Krispy Kremes. They put the "KK" in "KKK." Just kidding. But I DO hate them. Too sweet, no heft!

There is a great donut bakery in Seattle called Top Pot donuts. These donuts are baked fresh and are GOOOOD. they also have amazing crullers. The donuts have some WEIGHT and BITE to them. Heavenly.

Hello,

If you are looking for some first class donuts you may want to amke a trip to VG Donuts in Cardiff CA. I have been going there since 1968. It has been a the same family bakery since it first started. There is a campground across the street from it on the pacific ocean. Here are a couple of links if you want to check it out.
http://www.vgdonuts.com/
http://www.cal-parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=662

Allie's Donuts in North Kingstown, RI is pretty fabulous. It's a small, hole-in-the-wall, family owned place located midway bewtween Newport and Providence.

I nominate Lakewood Donut Shop near Tacoma, Washington. Krispy Kreme just recently arrived in our corner of the country. I was excited to try them but dissappointed I had waited in line. Sorry, but the flagship KK glazed donut has a vague flavor of cleaning solvent. Or maybe the store I visited just spilled some solvent in the batter?

Krumpe's Doughnuts in Hagerstown, Maryland. Made fresh every evening in the owner's garage that has been converted into doughnut heaven. Mmmmm...I think you gain pounds just breathing the air in there. They open around 7 pm in the evening and continue to make the yummy goodness into the wee hours of the morning...if you can't find this out of the way place, you can usually get a krumpe's at any of the nearby gas stations/convenience stores after the 5am drop-off. and they are dirt cheap!!

YUM!
