seeking advice -- scenic drive from DC to Chapel Hill

I'm planning a long weekend near Chapel Hill in early November and am hoping for suggestions/advice for the drive there and back. The only parameter is that I don't want to take more than a day either way (the primary goal is to get there), so no more than about 8 hours driving time. I've never driven to NC so don't know if getting off the interstate is worth the extra time or not. I'd be interested in fall color, interesting towns (antiques, good meals, etc.), scenic spots, and the like. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

US 15 goes all the way from Warrenton to Chapel Hill, passing through charming Culpeper, attractive Orange, and wonderful Gordonsville, home of the only BBQ I know of that is owned by a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. A great lunch stop. Oxford, NC is also a pleasant town.

The entire route is through attractive rural country, though there is some sprawl at the edges of towns. There is little traffic. Surfaces are good. Varies between two lane and divided highway.

You can stay on 15 until it joins I-85 north of Durham.

Ackislander -- Thanks! I'm especially happy to hear about the BBQ. Sounds like it'll be a nice drive.
