I learned a long time ago to ask at every check-in for an upgrade... I just say casually.. "any chance for an upgrade?" ... in over 50% of my hotel stays, they reply... "let me check..." the other 50% they know either yes or no... We have gotten some amazing suites and rooms because if a property knows that they have a high end room they haven't filled at check-in, they can put me there, and sell my lower priced room easier to a late walk-up... that's always been my secret travel secret... now you know...

totally agree with asking for an upgrade..works for us about 80% of the time and its usually big time score..plus, they send up champagne, cheese and treats.
What's the old saying..Ask and you shall receive!
Helps to be super nice too.
