Sedona, Grand Canyon and LV
 

Will be flying into Phoenix, renting a car and staying at the Southwest INN in Sedona for 3 nights. We want to see the Grand Canyon and then travel to Las Vegas for 3 nights and see Hoover Dam. What else can I do either in Sedona or Las Vegas. Is driving to Bryce Canyon doable? Lake Powell? <BR> <BR>Thank you

<BR>You have to take a pink jeep tour. These are great fun. You ride right up on the huge red rocks in Sedona and the views are awesome!

From Sedona, the Grand Canyon South Rim is 110 miles, or about 2 1/2 to 3 hours each way. From Sedona, Bryce is much, much too far for a day trip. For ideas on what to see and do in Sedona, make a free phone call to 1-800-288-7336 and ask to be sent the free 70-page booklet, "Experience Sedona," by the town's Chamber of Commerce. From Sedona, LV is about six hours, north in 89A, then I-40 west to Kingman, then northwest via Hoover Dam to LV. Bryce from LV might be more doable, 'cause you would be on I-5 most of the way; turn off near Panguitch and go via Ruby's Inn. Marvelous trip! Lake Powell from Sedona is doable. Be sure to take the day trip from Wahweap (on the other side of GlenCanyon Dam) on Lake Powell to Rainbow Bridge and return. A five-hour excursion on this fantastic lake. Phone the Wahweap Inn for departure time; the mid-day boat would be best, returning to Sedona after dark via 89, I-40, then south through Oak Creek Canyon on 89A. A full day that you will remember forever.

Another option you might consider is going to Zion National Park. It's even closer to Las Vegas than Bryce & Lake Powell. It is beautiful & has many wonderful hiking trails. It was one of my favorite vacations.

You better not be driving on I-5 as that means you are lost and a long ways away from Las Vegas ( LOL ). I assume that you made a typo and meant to say I-15 which goes up through Las Vegas and across to Utah cutting through the NW corner of Arizona.

Larry, of course, you are CORRECT -- it's I-15. I come from a long line of clunky map-readers, and I married one in 1952. She actually "lost" the Pennsylvania Turnpike on our honeymoon; couldn't tell the difference between Canfield, OH, and Canton, OH -- "Al, they both start with 'can,' don't they?" <BR>was her reason. Hmmmm. And 47 years later, we're still happily married; sort of like Burns and Allen.

I agree with not missing Montezuma's castle. <BR> <BR>If you go to Grand Canyon, you really should go at least a small distance below the rim. Only 2% of visitors do, but it is a different view of the area, and quite exciting.
