I was just wondering if anyone could update me on the recent security in NYC. Me and two of my friends are flying there Sat for 4 days (three girls, one 5 mos pregnant). Is the police and everything going to make us uneasy. We could maybe postpone the trip but don't really want to. thanks!

You'll be fine. The security sitation here has been the same since September 2001. There are armed National Guard in train stations and airports and the occasional cop with a rifle on Wall Street, but NYC is not an armed camp, in spite of what you may seen on the TV "news" infotainment shows.

There are camouflaged militia men on every corner armed with machine guns and night vision goggles and they frisk tourists at random as they walk down the street.
Step off the corner a split second early to cross and expect to be maced. Whistle too loud to hail a cab and you'll be whacked below the knees with a bayonnet, Tonya Harding style. Jaywalk and you'll be shot on sight.

(NYC currently functions virtually the same as always for tourists).

I heard this morning that the threats against NYC, Boston and Wash. DC, weren't credible after all, but they were still keeping extra security. I'm taking my kids to Disney for the weekend leaving tonight and feel a bit better after that news now, as we're leaving from Boston and changing planes in DC, then on to Orlando. I'll be thinking of all of brave travellers this weekend...God Bless!

Yes the police are going to make you uneasy. The pick out tourists and harrass them.

Do the police in your own hometown bother you?

NYC is a very safe and friendly city. You will have a great time.

don't postpone your trip! i live in nyc. the police don't make me uneasy, they make me feel secure. i like seeing police everywhere. i don't see how one of your friends being 5 mos pregnant is relevant. the police are monitoring things, we have had this security since 9/11, and you will be fine.
