Section of CA Hwy. 1 has collapsed
We had a huge storm this week. A section of California Highway 1 south of Big Sur has collapsed, and there will be no through traffic for the foreseeable future. Repairing the last landslide (2017) took a year....

I can't imagine how they will repair this. I'm sure they will, though. It will take more than a couple of weeks!

This time they knew it was coming . . . the road was closed to through traffic before the storm hit.
At least (until the next hit) the road is open from Monterey/Carmel into Big Sur. |
I Hope they get it fixed up and open before our next trip out, that is such a fantastic drive.
|
My guess is that it will be at least two years before that section of the road is open.

The Mud Creek slide had geologic origins. There was land movement over many years before the big event, and repairs were very complicated.
https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/03/...ophic-failure/ Hopefully, repairs of the recent slide will be more straight-forward. I looked at google images of that section of roadway from before the slide, and there was evidence of multiple small "patch" repairs to the asphalt which might just be normal maintenance stuff. Or not. The ravine (now small canyon) at the slide point would definitely funnel a lot of water through a small space. |
That's a beautiful highway, but there's definitely some problems with having it right on the coast. Not the first time I've heard of a chunk of HWY 1 collapsing. It takes a beating, especially when there's bad weather.

Amazingly, the road will reopen by April 30. The repair work is nearly two months ahead of schedule.

Barbara, that's great to hear! We celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary last summer doing the same thing we did 35 years before . . . driving Highway 1 up from SLO to Monterey, then onto SF.
That was not the only other time we've done that . . . at least 15 times in between! |
Barbara, thank you for the update! Great, and surprising, news!
Now, looking forward to Hearst Castle reopening. I know it'll happen. We waited seemingly "forever" and at last, Monterey Aquarium is re-opening! Surfergirl, how lovely! There can't be a better area anywhere to celebrate a wedding anniversary... or anything else! |
Not sure if you heard or not but Hearst Castle won't open anytime soon because they need to repair the road.
