Secluded Beaches on Maui

Hi!

So where are the secluded beaches!? =) If you don't want to make them public -- I can give you my email.

Thanks,
Jauricia

What's your idea of seclusion? No one around, few people around, or a feeling of less crowded. The following are my opinions based on our stay in JULY. In general, some of the so-called "best" beaches in Maui (Kapalua and Wailea) lie in front of the major hotels, are less than a half-mile in length but beautifully crescent-shaped, with a lot of kids in the summer, and will therefore have a "crowded" feel. Basically, any beach fronting hotels will feel crowded (e.g. Polo, Ka'anapali, etc.) as will any other well-known tourist stops around Hana(Black Sand Beach, Red Sand Beach, Hamoa Beach). The BIG beach, Makena, is also well-known but because of its expanse never gets too crowded and it doesn't front a hotel. Now if your questions is geared to the secluded/nude beaches, Little Makena is just north of Big Makena but requires a bit of rock climbing or swim. The other is Red Sand Beach just south of the Hana harbor. Just don't expect the French Riviera unless you catch a lucky day. If you missed the whales in winter/spring, you can catch the land whales during the summer!

If you really want to relax at secluded beaches, do the obvious: stay away from hotels, ask the locals or go early/late.

By seclusion i meant a place where a couple can be romantic without being watched. By romantic I don't mean having sex on the beach but maybe kiss, hold hands, hug, etc.

Thanks.

In that case, the following are some of the beaches that fit in the romantic mode (less crowds and children but scenic):
South Maui
"Secret" Cove -- between Makena Beach and Ahihi Bay, tiny, picturesque and popular for wedding photos. If you don't have a good resource, it's hard to find since its walled off with a narrow entrance.
There's a little-known beach past La Perouse Bay but you might have to walk through lava fields (no fun if the trail is not very worn out).
Palauea Beach is a good-sized beach south of Polo Beach which wasn't crowded when we went.
And try Makena (BIG) Beach. Just walk away from any of the entrances to find a more secluded spot.
West Maui
Although we didn't stop off at any of them, the beaches (Launiupoko, Olowalu and Papalua) along the highway between Ma'alea and Lahaina didn't seem that crowded.
Napili and Slaughterhouse Beach are probably the better, less crowded ones near the major hotels.
Any beaches or spots along the coastline from Kapalua to Kahului will probably fit your idea since this area is the least visited. We particularly enjoyed the Nakalele Blowhole and the Olivine Pools.
Some of the beaches past Hana are really nice such as Hamoa but they might not feel secluded.
Also, the coastline around Paia can offer some gems. We particularly liked the small beach in front of Mama's Fish House during sunset. Any beach (Baldwin, Ho'okipa) in this area will generally be less crowded than those in West or South Maui as mostly locals go instead of the tourists.

But as most couples will attest, any beach will feel secluded and romantic if you stroll along it during sunset or early morning. Kapalua, Wailea are gems at those times as well as Ka'anapali near the Black Rock. Ultimate seclusion and romance is to walk the beaches after 9pm when there's no one around but mister moon shining down along the shore. Enjoy!

BTW, A good guide book such as Maui Revealed will be an invaluable resource in finding the best secluded beaches. I'm sorry Jauricia if I suggested you might have been asking for directions to the nude beaches. It's just that some people tend to ask for such in a roundabout manner.
