Seattle to Portland: Train..Bus... or Thumb

beachbum, to me it makes no sense to fly Portland to Seattle. When you consider the hassles of getting through security, worrying about weather, etc. it just doesn't make sense. Horizon Air may obviously beg to differ, but to me, it is just easier to connect Seattle and Portland by rail. In 20 years, isn't eliminating some of the local planes going to make air traffic headaches a little easier?
The thing is, rail simply needs to become a little faster and more reliable than it is now. And that costs money. You'll notice that our airlines are subsidized, too (e.g. after 9/11) by taxpayer money. Why not rail? Again, I'm not talking about New York to LA - no one wants to take a 3-day train ride anymore except for leisure. But if it was 2.5 hours (pretty reliably) from Portland to Seattle, isn't that better than dealing with airports and flying?
