Seattle Safety
We're going to be in Seattle from 5/8 through 5/11, staying at the Roosevelt Hotel. Is this a safe area to walk at night, or should be use a cab? Are there areas one should avoid at night?
I've never been to Seattle and I don't want to get into an area where I shouldn't be. Is the neighborhood east of US5 along Pike Street OK? Thanks. |
Yes, okay area at night. Lots of people going to restaurants, movies, etc.
East of Interstate 5 is a fun area - Pike/Pine corridor. Lots of fun restaurants and bars, some gay, some straight, none uptight. |
FYI, Seattle has a very low personal crime rate. I've lived here 27 years and have never known anyone that was the victim of a mugging or other kind of random violent crime.

I consider downtown Seattle around the Roosevelt Hotel a safe area. Some parts of downtown are busier and others empty out more at night. You may be surprised by the amount of homeless people you see, but they are not a danger, just a sad situation.
Any areas you might want to avoid are in outer neighborhoods, none that you'd happen upon as a tourist in town. The "Pike/Pine corridor" east of I-5 is a fun and lively district. A bit off-beat with tattoo parlors, bars, dance clubs, interesting restaurants, bookstores, vintage shops, used furniture. I'm not real up-to-date on venues but places like Bimbo's, Cha Cha Lounge, Capitol Club, Chop Suey, Ellisian Brewery, Baltic Room are all in this general area. A very nice restaurant for dinner nearby, is 1200 Bistro at the corner of Pike & 12th. Stylish bar and excellent Seattle atmosphere in the dining room. |
Some good restaurants . . . for lunch, the Nordstrom's Grill, located in Nordstrom's store, which is downtown. Inexpensive but very good! Their macaroons are huge!! We ate at two different waterfront restaurants, one was Anthony's and the other one was at Elliotts seafood restaurant. We also ate at the space needle . . very expensive but well worth the wonderful view.

Thanks for the information. I feel a lot more comfortable exploring.
The Pike/Pine corridor sounds like an interesting place. I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks again. |
