Seattle-Portland

I have heard lot of different opinions from people regarding visiting Seattle and Portland.
From those I conclude that between Seattle and Portland- I should pick seattle and not really worry going to portland since major attractions are just overrated.

Please let me know- I would like to plan a 3-4 day trip and would like to know where I should be spending more time Seattle or Portland?

With such a short trip I would choose one or the other...trying to do both would short-change both.

Portland has lots to recommend it and should not be dismissed out of hand. I have no idea of what major attractions are overrated.

I live in the Seattle area and it gets my highly biased vote.

BTW, if you tag your message for Oregon and Washington it will get more attention than a post in the US forum.

Are you going to see nothing but the cityscapes?
Did you want to rent a car to see anything outside either city?
You might consider flying to one spending 3 days and then take one of the Amtrak trains to the other city.
Both cities have good public transit.
If you wanted to see things outside Seattle, Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens would be good.
Outside Portland, see the Columbia Gorge, Multnomah Falls and Mt. Hood.
There is an arboretum on the U of W area in Seattle.
The Rose Gardens in Portland and the zoo are things to see using public transit.
The TriMet red line is good to get from downtown Portland to the PDX airport.

I'm with Bob. We've done both as SEPARATE TRIPS, each for 8 nights, and felt it was about right even though we skipped many sights and entire neighborhoods. 8-night trips to each also allowed for day trips (most of Tom's list above) from each.
