seattle highlights

Hi,

My daughter is going to arrive in Seattle the day before her medical residency interview. I hope that Fodorites might be able to suggest what to see during her free day, a Thursday.
She likes museums, walking and would like to see the highlights and any hidden gems that a tourist might miss.
Thanks very much!
Bonnie

The new Seattle public library is a must - it is an architectural masterpiece and a fascinating piece of planning. The Seattle art museum is also great, Pikes Market, riding a ferry is fun to Vashon Island or Bainbridge Island and back. I write for familytravelforum.com, but my oldest child is 19, so younger than yours, but is interested in museums and culture and we love Seattle. The Seattle Center that you can ride to from downtown on the monorail has a science center, music museum, the Space Needle, and more.

If she'll be in Seattle the first Thursday of the month, she might enjoy this gallery walk:

Is your daughter considering a move to Seattle? I ask that because, if yes, perhaps she'd want to look at the various neighborhoods, to find the area she'd prefer to live... rather than visiting tourist high-lights?

Good luck to your daughter in her residency interview.

Unfortunately the main Seattle Art Museum is closed for renovations, but she might like the Frye Museum, a "hidden gem" near Swedish Medical Center at 7th and Terry. Entrance is free, and they have a nice little cafe for lunch.

A nice walk araound Seattle could include the Pike Place Market, then south along the waterfront or through the downtown area to Madison St., and up to the amazing library, then on up the hill to the Frye.

From downtown she could also take the monorail to Seattle Center and the Pacific Science Center.

Faux pas, familytravelforum. It's PIKE PLACE market, not Pike's market.

The Asian Art Museum up at Volunteer Park in Capitol Hill is open. As mentioned, the downtown main SAM is closed at this time.

The Frye Art Museum is a little gem, with free admission. It is located on First Hill--near three big hospitals.
