Seattle -- Emerald City?

Is Seattle known as the "Emerald City?" If so, WHY? Thanks!

John May 16th, 2000 05:47 AM

Because it's the capital of Micro-Oz.

John, are you referring specifically to Microsoft or the entire "silicon valley" industry in Seattle?

Christine May 17th, 2000 03:24 AM

As far as I can remember I've known Seattle as the Emerald City. It is surrounded by evergreen trees. At least that is the way I understand it. Has nothing to do with Microsoft.

I am referring to Seattle's rather strange (and somewhat myopic) view of itself and its role in the world. The Wall Street Journal ran a splenid editorial on that last year, during the WTO riots.

It's called the emerald city because at night the city skyline gives off a greenish glow--due to the mist, evergreen trees.
