Seattle Cooking Classes
Love to take a cooking class when I'm in a new city, and am looking for suggestions in Seattle for a four-day visit in August. Have taken classes in Istanbul, Paris and Chicago on recent trips and would love to find a local-cuisine opportunity in Seattle or nearby. Suggestions?

I see nobody is responding. Fun events do happen here, and somebody may be able to give you a good suggestion is you were to offer the exact dates you will be in town.
For instance, if you were to be in Seattle on May 5, June 3, or June 24, you could go to an intimate cooking class given by Ludger Szmania at the lovely restaurant he opened twenty years ago in an established Seattle neighborhood: http://www.szmanias.com/index_files/story.htm |
PS Here is a link to an article about Seattle cooking classes that appeared in our local newspaper in August, 2009:

If you like pie, Kate McDermott does "Art of the Pie" classes that are meant to demystify the whole process. I've taken a short class with Kate and it was great, and I've heard great things about the longer class. http://www.artofthepie.com/artofthepie/Classes.html Kerry Sear, chef at ART at the Four Seasons, does periodic market tours and cooking classes in the summer. Check the Four Seasons Seattle website from time to time; they don't currently have anything listed but I would imagine he'll be doing them again this year. Twitter is a great resource for finding out about cooking and food related events here--I found out about the Kate McDermott class on Twitter. |
Thanks for the suggestions. We will be there July 31 - Aug 4. I then head to Milwaukee for a conference, so any ideas there would be welcome too!

The cooking classes (usually once a month) held by the chefs at Ostera La Spiga and at Le Gourmand are very highly regarded.

Well not a cooking class exactly, but you might enjoy the Savor Seattle tours (around the Pike Place Market and downtown). I was reminded of them today because a small group was having samples where I was picking up lunch (Pike Place Chowder). I've also run across them when I was out to lunch at Brasserie Margeux. Low-key, walking tours, in small groups, with interesting informative tour guides.

Thanks for sharing your dates in Seattle, but I find nothing that fits into your schedule. If I had your interest, I would contact some of our top chefs. If they aren't offering a class, they may know somebody who is:
Ethan Stowell http://ethanstowellrestaurants.com/blog/ Tom Douglas http://tomdouglas.com/ Thierry Rautureau http://www.thechefinthehat.com/ Kevin Davis http://www.steelheaddiner.com/ Ron Zimmerman www.theherbfarm.com Also, Ludger Szmania, whom I mentioned earlier, sometimes gives very intimate "classes" at the counter next to his open kitchen. Tell him this suggestion was given to you by somebody who has been dining at his restaurant for twenty years. HTTY |
Welcome to Seattle! I offer 9 classes each week focused on fresh seasonally available local ingredients. I'm not sure whether or not we have a match but you can check out my website at www.dianesmarketkitchen.com. If I can be of any service please call on me. Wishing you time in the kitchen with those you love
