Seattle-Convention in town?

I will be in Seattle starting August 9. My hotel tells me that there is a convention in town with 6000 members. All hotels in Seattle are sold out. Does anyone know what the convention is?

Ones I could spot quickly are national conventions for statisticians (Convention Center), anti-war veterans (UW) and thimble collectors (Seattle Center.) Really.

Statistically, the statisticians have probably got probability working on their side. Big conference, statistics-wise.

Googling, I found:

JSM (the Joint Statistical Meetings) is the largest gathering of statisticians held in North America. It is held jointly with the American Statistical Association, the International Biometric Society (ENAR and WNAR), the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the Statistical Society of Canada. Attended by over 5000 people, activities of the meeting include oral presentations, panel sessions, poster presentations, continuing education courses, exhibit hall (with state-of-the-art statistical products and opportunities), career placement service, society and section business meetings, committee meetings, social activities, and networking opportunities. Seattle is the host city for JSM 2006 and offers a wide range of possibilities for sharing time with friends and colleagues. Woo-hoo! Won't Seattle be party city THAT weekend! :-)

Hee hee maybe I should head up there and go to town calculating statistical data... yada yada

I don't know what so funny about statisticians. In my book they are very hot guys, and if I were in Seattle in early August I would hang around the Convention Center and make goo-goo eyes at them. I bet I'd get lucky.

Littlemarysunshine, what do you think the odds are of that happening?

littlemarysunshine Aug 8th, 2006 05:37 PM

I think it would be odd if it didn't happen. After all, I give out a lot of light and even more heat.

Statistically, there's no such thing as getting lucky.

But perhaps you'd benefit from Chaos Theory?

Orcas Aug 8th, 2006 06:25 PM

I just wouldn't count on it if I were LM Sunshine!

starrsville Aug 8th, 2006 06:35 PM

I wonder what the odds are?

saps Aug 8th, 2006 06:41 PM

I've calculated the probability of a single woman who is wearing something slightly revealing and standing on the corner of the convention center, where 6000 statisticians will be departing from 8 hours of poster sessions and commitee meetings, to go home with a smile on her face.

The answer is 99.99999999%

starrsville Aug 8th, 2006 07:04 PM

Dang! Does anyone know of some cheap tix to Seattle?

redfern Aug 9th, 2006 07:19 AM

I guess maybe I have never met a statistician before?! When I was single the mathmatical type weren't my style.(May have something to do with the fact that math is something I cannot stand). Good luck girls on catching one of them! :)

Orcas Aug 9th, 2006 07:23 AM

Heck. If you're really coming here for the statistician types, drop by the Microsoft campus and oogle. It's full of young male numbers-types, many of whom are not married.
There's an old saying, "Noone wants to date an engineer but everyone wants to marry one...."

redfern Aug 9th, 2006 07:29 AM

Well, in all reality in every field there are cute guys I'm sure....
I know, starrsville can go to the convention and to Microsoft! Make it a package deal....That way her chances are even better then 9.99999999%.

redfern Aug 9th, 2006 07:30 AM

Golly, I put the . in the wrong spot... 99.9999999999...........%

Fodorite018 Aug 9th, 2006 07:39 AM

Orcas--LOL! I dated and married one...who is from Seattle:)
