Seattle City Suites

I have stayed at a number of places around Seattle, and would like to stay near the market with free parking. The kitchen is a real plus! I found Seattle City Suites this morning, and it seems to fit the bill. Does anyone on here have any experience with this place?

I had never heard of this hotel so I looked it up and found it isn't a hotel--it is a service. They claim to have been in business since 2008, but I could find only one review of their properties on line: http://www.yelp.com/biz/seattle-city-suites-seattle

Ugh. Thanks.

There were a couple of very good reviews on Trip Advisor, so I thought maybe it would be a go. I really have no desire to be somewhere sketchy.

Any ideas? We have stayed at the Inn at the Market and the Hotel Monaco when we've stayed downtown, and I hate paying a zillion dollars to park.

I also have never heard of this place.

There are no hotels "near the Market with free parking" unfortunately.

I have heard good things about the 11th Avenue Inn Bed and Breakfast. It is located on a good street on Capitol Hill; it is near many restaurants, bars, and shops; and it is an easy walk from there to down town.

The Maxwell near Seattle Center has free parking, as does the Silver Cloud on Lake Union (convenient to the trolley.) The Silver Cloud on Broadway (adjacent to Seattle University) charges $19 to park.

Or try Priceline at the 4* level and use the savings to cover the parking.

I live on Capitol Hill. I *LOVE* it there. It's only a couple miles from downtown so extremely convenient to everything.

Just so you all know how the story ends, I ended up booking at Hotel 1000. I decided it was easier to stay downtown and drive to yoga, visits, neighborhoods, than it was to stay in a neighborhood and try to find parking downtown.

But my eyes are more open, and will really scope out the other options while I'm there.

Thanks for the update. Hotel 1000 has a great reputation, and I hope you will give us a report after you experience the place.

HTTY, I hope it's great! Less expensive then In at the Market and similar ratings. Not going until mid-September, but stay tuned.

Hotel 1000 was the best. It's located about half way between the market and Pioneer Square, so it was a nice easy walk everywhere downtown. The staff was smart and accommodating and considerate. My husband sleeps much later than I do, and there's a nice lounge just off the lobby which has coffee and newspapers and comfy chairs. Also had a great massage!

We didn't rent a car and avoided the big parking fees. We walked a lot, and our son and DIL drove us to the many neighborhoods and restaurants.

The only funny things about the hotel were that the bathroom and bedroom were separated by a glass wall, and the bathtub filled from the ceiling. I don't think you could take a bath without it splashing you on the head and making a great big mess. The glass wall had an automatic privacy curtain which we kept shut, and neither of us takes baths.

If we stay downtown again, we would absolutely stay there again.

My sister and I were traveling and were looking forward to staying at a unit managed by Seattle City Suites. She specifically looked for units with air conditioning and this one came up on the search.

We arrived in Seattle to 90+ degree weather. Needless to say, we were looking forward to cooling down in the unit. After trying to unlock the door which the owners said was difficult (which is an understatement), we finally managed to enter the unit. It was 89 degrees inside, stuffy, and humid.

In addition to two ineffective fans that blew hot air around, the "air conditioner" was an "in-unit" one. Basically what that means is a box that sits in the middle of a room and emits cold air directly in front of it. If you are standing within a foot of the unit, you will feel cold air. Anything further away...you're going to be out of luck.

There is a large, dryer-type tube that extends from the back that is ***supposed*** to be vented outside. That wasn't the case at this unit. It was laying on the floor next to the "air conditioner" so when it was on, hot air blew out the back of it and into the room.

Since the unit was clearly misrepresented, my sister called the owner. The owner told my sister to simply open the door, put the tube outside, and keep the door open. All. The. Time.

Wait...what? We were supposed to open the door and keep it open all the time? Why, yes, because - according to the owner - "that's how it's done in Seattle."

Really? Because we stayed there a week and we didn't see doors and windows with tubes sticking out of them. We didn't see ANYONE with wide open doors letting the hot air into their units to cool them down. Nope. Not one.

According to the owner, we were to leave the patio door open all the time in order for the tube of the "in unit air conditioner" to go outside.

So, if the next door neighbor wanted to they could easily crawl over the low railing connecting the two units and enter the apartment since there wasn't even a lockable screen door leading to the patio.

From a safety standpoint, neither my sister or I felt this was acceptable.

Who in their right mind would tell guests to leave the door open all night when someone could enter the unit?

Leaving a door open is an open invitation to either being robbed or assaulted. If we left the door open during the day and the place was vandalized, guess who would be responsible for damage to the unit? Yep...the guests.

Being that we weren't in the mood to be assaulted or robbed during our stay in Seattle nor did we want to pay for damage to the unit if it was vandalized, we felt it was best not to stay there.

Compounded with the fact that the temperature of the "air conditioned" unit went down only 1 degree in 1 1/2 hours that we were in the unit - to an uncomfortable 88 degrees - we politely told the owner we did not want to stay there.

For 8 days, we struggled with the owner trying to get back some of the money that my sister had pre-paid for the unit. The owner was insistent that she was right. She was not at all responsive to our concerns about the comfort of the unit or our safety despite having clearly misrepresented it on many levels. She had a habit of "talking over" both of us. It was both rude and offensive to not be listened to; and to be constantly interrupted so she could make her point.

Although my sister did receive a couple nights reimbursed (though not even at the full rate she paid) as well as the cleaning fee and taxes, it truly was one of the most miserable, frustrating experiences in dealing with a property owner.

Having traveled extensively domestically and internationally, this is the first time that we have both had to deal with a person who was argumentative and dismissive of our concerns.

Had we not had such positive experiences with other owners of units throughout Seattle (and for the rest of our trip) we would have had a very bad impression of Seattle.

In addition to the issue with the air conditioning, the patio with the "ocean view" (as noted as a feature of the unit) is the width of a chair and - if you sat in it - your knees would hit the metal bars. The length of it? Enough to get 2 chairs on it.

The view is of the building across from the balcony. If you somehow contort your body and stand sideways in the few inches available, you can see water, but it isn't the ocean. It's Puget Sound.

Interestingly, the dollhouse-size metal balcony is connected to the balcony of the next door's unit. They have a very small sofa out on it.

The carpet in the unit was dingy and dirty in spots. There were visible stains on the carpet.

On Seattle City Suites' website, there's a photo showing a welcome area with information book, container for the keys, and snacks/goodies. The table had the first two items, but nothing to eat. Although this a minor detail, it was just one more thing that we felt like was misrepresented on photographs of the unit.

As mentioned earlier, the key to get into the unit did not work effectively. We spent a good 10 minutes trying to get into the unit. The owners were aware that the key and lock did not work. Why they don't spend $50 to get a new key and lock is beyond us. Such a simple solution to create one less struggle for guests.

When we tried to return the keys, we could not gain access to the building. (We were able to get into the building the first time because someone was buzzed in before us and let us in.) After spending over 25 minutes trying to contact someone per the instructions provided by the owner, we finally gave up. It was simply not worth the time and effort at that point.

We were grateful to not have to stay there and potentially not be able to get back into the unit throughout our stay. Getting access to the building and unit should not be so challenging. It's almost as if the owners do not want to make one's stay pleasant and relaxing. They truly made situations complicated and frustrating that didn't have to be.

Would we ever consider recommending Seattle City Suites to anyone? Absolutely not. It was, by far, one of the worst experiences we have ever had. We would not wish that same experience on anyone.

Thanks for telling us about your unfortunate experience. Next time, check in here before you book a room you might regret.

HTtY

PS It would be interesting to know the location of the place you stayed.

I definitely will, HTtY!

Seattle City Suites has several units they rent. It sounds like they all have similar issues with the "air conditioning."

However, the particular unit I'm referring to is: http://seattlecitysuites.com/Seattle...5#.V19urI-cHIU . They also have it listed here: https://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p3469105
